93 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Mark. Interesting crop! I'm not sure I'd go that tight, but hear what you are saying and might be better cropping some of the top off. Jan 27th
93 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Neil! Waders were very new to me on this trip, but now that I have them, I'm sure I'll use them again. But oh boy, they are a LOT to lug around and fly internationally with! Jan 17th
93 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Ed, I'm glad it looks serene -- when I was taking it, it was less then with the waves coming in and out! I really liked this one out of the ones that I took with the flow around the water. I tried to time the tide going out to get that effect and was happy with the result of it! Jan 17th
93 Jan 24 Reply Once you get the hang of them, it's easy! I carried around ND's and never used them. I'm now looking for ways to use them when I'm out there! It's all about trying different times with them. Good luck! Jan 17th
93 Jan 24 Reply Very welcome! The big one was the selective color layer for the magenta removal! Jan 13th
93 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Darcy, getting out and shooting when I can and going to some great locations certainly helps my photography! Forgot that, yes, I'm pretty sure I had the 3 stop ND on there, but could have been a 6 stop. As the light was changing, I was adjusting the filters. Jan 13th
93 Jan 24 Comment You have done a great job capturing the depth of this image-- foreground, fields, mountains, then Mount Etna -- all in focus!

One minor thing I'd look at is possibly cropping the sky a bit. The blue is beautiful, but I feel that there's too much of it and by cropping it to 16x10, it brings everything else a bit closer. While I was in there, I made adjustments to the HSL (blue) increased the contrast a tiny bit.

93 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Paul, it was indeed worth the wait! This was our third trip to this location. We did two sunset shoots and one sunrise. We had the best light on the final visit (was the same for another location as well and will share an image from that location soon!). I really enjoyed this trip as we visited amazing locations and we were able to go back to some of them a few times to try to get better light.

To answer your "tons" question, we started shooting ~7:15 pm and wrapped up about 8:45 pm. The light at the beginning was pretty gray and flat with a bit of blue sky, so we were hoping it might give us some color at some point -- our patience paid off as you can see! On this night, I took ~250 shots, moving to different boulders throughout the time there and adjusting with the waves. I had started shooting this boulder when we got there, then finished on it as it's the most interesting with the water cascading over it and with the good light.

93 Jan 24 Comment Ed,

Great job capturing this in focus - shooting on a boat is hard! I like the moodiness of the clouds and agree B&W feels like the right way to process this. I like how there's room on the right side of the frame that makes me wonder where this is heading too.

To me, this feels a bit flat and there seems to be a halo on around the ship, perhaps from processing?

I took a crack at some quick edits and decreased the shadows a bit and increased the whites. I then went and added a few masks in LightRoom, first I selected they sky and decreased the exposure 1/4 of a stop, I then selected the subject and increased the exposure of the boat 1/4 stop, increased the whites a tiny bit and decreased the blacks to add a bit more contrast. Finally, I added a linear gradient to the water and decreased that exposure 1/4 stop and also decreased the texture and clarity to "smooth" the water. Let me know your thoughts!

93 Jan 24 Comment Paul,

Really nice capture and processing here. I feel that I'm on the side of a lake watching the sunset with a great silhouette of both the boat and the geese. If looks like they are on the boat watching the sunset and geese fly by.

I like your usage of the clone tool to extend the sun reflection, it looks perfect

Interesting usage of AI adding the geese (haven't used the AI feature it yet!). Can you change the direction of them? I feel it would be better if they were going in the same direction of the boat!

93 Jan 24 Comment Mark,
I like your shutter speed that you used for this and how it captured both the power and speed of the water, but the trickle on the sides as well.

I read your comments and see you went back and forth on different crops of it. Curious if you had one that had a bit more of the water at the bottom? I like how this is framed/cropped, but feel myself wanting to see a bit more of the water at the bottom.

In regard to your tonal range and processing, I think it is pretty spot on (as usual). One tiny nit for me is that the top right feels a tad too dark/black.

93 Jan 24 Comment Hi Darcy,

I like the pop of red of the building amidst the green of the trees. I agree, it's too magenta.

I know you had brought it over to PS to make some adjustments. I figured I'd try to make some adjustments. Let me know your thoughts!

One way you can remove the magenta is by adding a selective color layer, then decreasing the magenta on that layer. I also increased the yellow a bit on the green color on that same layer and make some adjustments to the rea as well to darken the building just a tad. I then added a Hue Saturation layer and adjusted the green saturation as it felt a bit too vibrant to me.

I also felt that it needed a bit more contrast and added a curves layer and added a small "s" curve to increase the contrast a tiny bit. I then also added a vignette around it to darken the everything but the middle. To finish, I sharpened it a bit with NIK.
