Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
43 Apr 25 Reply I think you're right, Lane. There's a fine line between showing too much and not enough. I wanted to focus on the athlete and emotions, but sacrificed the context from the surroundings. Oh well, I guess I'll have to go back and shoot this kind of event again! :-) Apr 27th
43 Apr 25 Reply That's pretty funny, Bunny. He does look like he's break dancing! I know, if I tried that, I'd break my neck! :-) This ties into Harley's comment about giving more context to the scene to tell the story. Good thoughts, all!

43 Apr 25 Reply Thank you, Bruce. I remember the Agony of Defeat guy from TV. Wow, I cringe thinking about him going off that ski jump! It's funny, I didn't notice that red in the image. I was focused on the athlete. Now that you mention it, I can't unsee it. You're 100% right, it needs to go. I appreciate the compliments and suggestions. Apr 21st
43 Apr 25 Reply Thanks, Harley. I think one of the posts holding the bar up would help tell the story better. This was the high jump. Maybe if I was not straight-on to the athlete, I could've included more of the bar and the posts holding it up. I'll just have to go back and try it again! Apr 21st
43 Apr 25 Reply Thank you, Bunny. We had a great time and I'm very pleased with the images I brought home. It's a lot of fun to take these workshops and get out to explore with friends. Apr 21st
43 Apr 25 Reply Thank you, Mark. There's been a lot of discussion recently about noise reduction in reality-based categories. The PPA world is leaning towards not allowing noise reduction in photojournalism, so I was trying to fight that battle in-camera. Plus, it was almost mid day, so the sun was bright enough that I could get away with a lower ISO. Not to play favorites, but I think my 70-200 f/2.8 is my favorite lens right now. Apr 21st
43 Apr 25 Comment Nice work on this image, Bruce. Your exposure is spot-on. The texture in the bird and water come across very well. I know in an action shot, sometimes "they" want to see blur to show the motion. I think the split second capture here is effective in giving us the decisive moment. The wake behind the bird tells the story, yet there's just enough room in front of our friend. You've also placed the bird in the rule of thirds spot, which strengthens your composition.
I wasn't there and I don't know this bird personally, but I'm guessing the facial expression is because the water was cold and a surprise this early in the morning.
Well sone!

43 Apr 25 Comment Wow, Harley! You put a lot of work and thought into this work and it shows. I'm just starting to play with macro photography so I'm always curious to see how the other kids are doing it. I've not worked with focus stacking yet, but it looks like you nailed it. You did a great job of keeping the berry and spoon in focus. They're the star of the show. The blur of the background is very effective in isolating the subject. At first, I didn't care for the busyness of the background, but I think it helps add a feeling of a picnic scene, which gives us a sense of place that helps tell your story. You handled the colors very well, and the light box worked perfectly. There are no blaring highlights or shadows, but there is still decent contrast and directionality in the lighting. Nice work!! 43 Apr 25 Comment Mark, this image has lots of impact. I love the fact that you went with monochrome, and your presentation is very well handled. The stroke you used is not so bright that it's distracting, but it does a great job of containing the viewers' gaze within the frame. It also puts a finishing touch on the image.
Now, the judges? Well, judges can be full of.....themselves sometimes. This image appears to be exposed properly. There is detail in the whites within the owl. There is also no lack of detail. The area around the eyes is tack-sharp and I can see each whispy feather.
The only things I would change about this if I had a magic wand would be to expand the crop a bit. You cut off the feet/toes. I would either show all of them, or bring the bottom of the frame up to maybe just above the band on his leg. It makes the crop more intentional. The other change I would make would be to increase your depth of field a bit to make all of the bird sharp. I suspect that would have satisfied the judges.
As far as composition, exposure, creativity, and presentation go, you did a great job telling this story.

43 Apr 25 Comment You've done a great job with this concept, Lane. The creativity is off the charts. I like how your background works with the textures within the blooms and even the surface of the ice hanging off of the buds. The colors work well together, I'm seeing browns in the background that go well with the flowers. This was a well thought out image, and the work you put into it shows. The scene conveys quite a story and your explanation helps strengthen the sense of what's going on. Apr 21st
43 Apr 25 Comment Very well done, Leo. The buildings add a framing element as well as act as additional leading lines to the sun that was perfectly placed in the frame. The rails are reflecting the sunlight, which add impact. They also draw our eyes into the middle of the frame. You perfectly exposed the scene. There is great detail in both the highlights and shadows. The warm tones from the setting sun really set the mood for this scene. Your focus is as sharp as possible and helps make this image wonderful. It makes me want to visit this city. Terrific work! Apr 21st
43 Apr 25 Comment I love the imagination this shows, Bunny. This checks so many boxes on the list of what makes a great image. From how the yellow in his shirt matches the stairs to the repeating patterns throughout the frame. I also like how the angles in the stairs and railing contrasts with the curving lines in the top of the image. I really think you nailed this one and applaud your awareness to catch this scene. Well done! Apr 5th
