Catch! I see what you did there, Harley. Altering the background is always a challenge when you have an area that is so breathtaking in its scenery. If you blur or darken the area to accentuate your subject it almost loses something. It certainly is a toss-up. Taking a break from the world is why we do this, right? Glad I could help us stop and take a breath. |

Thanks, Bruce. That was a tough decision as I was cropping. I wanted to maintain the detail of the fisherman and not have too much negative space, but the rod tip and line does complete the story. Here's another angle, showing more of the surroundings. I'm torn because I want to narrow the focus to the fisherman but how do you not include the natural beauty? So much to soak in up there, that's for sure. Thanks for the things to think about. |

Thanks, Bunny. I've only recently discovered this part of the world, and I'm glad I did! Every time I go up there it seems like I find a new treasure. Holler if you're ever in the area. I'll meet you there. (Did someone say "Group 43 Outing"??)
I'll see what I can do about the red shirt. ;-) |

Working in this kind of setting is double tough, Bunny. The highlights can be so hot and unforgiving. You really managed to tame a difficult situation. You even managed to get catch lights in the bird's eyes. What you did right here, you did REALLY right. If you were concentrating on the face, you absolutely nailed it! |

Nice work here, Bruce. I think the genius of this image is in the simplicity. It's clean and understated, but as you wander into the windmill, you see the texture and tones that are very subtle and hold your attention within the frame. I am also a fan of the sepia treatment. You handled the sky perfectly. There's just enough information there to add to the story and create some interest. The only thing I see as a detriment is that there appears to be some haloing around the blades of the windmill, and the sky on the inside of the windmill, about 5:00 to 9:00 is a little hot.
Great execution of a wonderful idea! |

This is a really interesting image, Harley. I love how the green in the woods and landscaping work with the house's roof. I also like how the lines of the trees frame the flowing lines of the landscaping around the house, then accentuate the geometry that the house itself brings to the party. The cool blues of the pool and part of the house's roof also show up in the asphalt of the driveway and the water in the lower right of the frame. The eyes wander throughout the image and the similar colors keep my gaze within the frame. This is an intriguing composition made from a different angle. Well executed! |

Wonderful image of a fascinating subject, Bunny. You did a great job with the shallow depth of field. The bokeh in the background is really well handled and it makes your subject stand out. Your exposure and focus are spot on. The feathers on our friend are well rendered and you captured a terrific expression on the face! The only changes I'd make is to darken the lower right corner and get rid of the branch coming into the frame on the right. Ok, one slight addition....were you able to capture the bottom part of the bird? The crop at the bottom left me wanting more.
Nice job! |
