Great macro work, Harley. You nailed the exposure and focus on the bud. The detail is really well represented and we have wonderful color tones throughout. Excellent choice on the depth of field. There is just enough going on in the background to add visual interest, but does not distract from the subject, and the colors all work well together. Great diffused light didn't make it too contrasty. I think you handled this situation very well. |

Nice work, Leo! I was going to comment that you want the subject facing into the frame then I realized there are two butterflies here! I love the balance between the two insects as well as the leaves on the right adding a little visual weight and breaking up the negative space on the right. The wings of the butterflies look like stained glass windows. Great color representation throughout the image. The blurred and dark background really make the subjects stand out.

Thanks, Harley. I think Mark nailed it. All of his friends had abandoned him. I'd be cross too! |

Thanks, Bruce. I'd love to take the credit and say I saw the reed in the background, and took painstakingly meticulous steps to line it up perfectly. I didn't. I'll take luck every day of the week. In fact, I don't think I notice it until I got the image home and started playing with it on the screen. |

I think I really like it a lot, Bunny. I appreciate the idea. It seems like a small change, but it really makes a difference. Thank you! |

One of the better images? This one is fantastic, Bruce! I think the software out there is really good at dealing with noise lately, and the cameras have really come a long way. ISO 640 was just fine for this image. You've got great detail and color saturation. The timing was perfect in catching the fish in midair. The edge light on the heron really helps separate it from the background and you blurred the background really well. I also like how you captured the reflection in the water. It really completes the image. The only thing I'd try is to bring down the highlights. The background has some areas that are a bit hot and distracting. I'm not sure how much you'll be able to do with that. I have trouble maintaining the exposure on the subject when doing that. Great job! |

Oh no, Mark! I hope you're on the mend and feeling better. Wonderful image of our friend, here. It looks like he's got lunch figured out. I love how he's off to the left of the frame and looking out the right side. His eye is nice and sharp and gives him lots of personality. Fog is a tough thing to deal with. I went into camera raw and popped the saturation a little, brought up the dehaze slider, put some more density into the black, and increased the texture a bit. I think it helped the image a bit.
I hope you're up and at `em soon. Keep these great images coming! |

Oh, Bunny...well done! I can't tell you how often I've photographed birds at the beach and tried to get two together in synch like this. The blurred background is handled perfectly. You've been able to keep the detail in the lighter areas of the birds, but still have rich blacks on the tips of their wings. I love the framing and crop you've given your image. As an airplane photographer who sometimes plays with birds, this image really caught my eye. Great job!! |
