43 Jul 24 Reply I think you came into a tough, high contrast situation and came away with a winner. If only we could control every aspect of our photographic world....dare to dream! :-) Jul 26th
43 Jul 24 Reply I appreciate it, Bruce. I'm pleased with how it came out, but there's always room to improve. I appreciate everyone's thoughts here and definitely take the suggestions with me when I go shoot the next fire. (Which surely won't be a long wait)
I had a pretty good spot for this. I try to choose locations that are close, but safe. I actually had a highway patrol car come "suggest" to us that we might not be in the best spot. I don't like attracting negative attention like that. I thanked the officer and moved on. It's always a struggle. We have an officer who's also a great photographer coming to talk to our local club next month about how to shoot emergency scenes and stay safe. I'm looking forward to it.
I appreciate your thoughts.

43 Jul 24 Reply Thanks, Leo. The elements seemed to all come to come together for me that day! Jul 26th
43 Jul 24 Reply Ha! I think you're right about Bunny and her research. I find it really valuable.
I have a monopod and think I even had it in the car that day. I need to get out and practice with it more. I find it tough when I shoot the jets in the canyon and at fires because the aircraft aren't coming through at a constant level. I think mastering the use of the tool will pay off big time.

43 Jul 24 Reply Good thoughts, Bunny. I have ND filters for my 24-70 lens. I'll check on what they have for the 200-500. That's a really interesting article. I guess I need more practice on using slower shutter speeds. I'm always nervous about keeping the aircraft sharp, but the prop/rotor blur is always desirable. Thanks for the great info! Jul 26th
43 Jul 24 Reply I like your crop too, Harley. You can see more of the helicopter and what they're doing. It's always a struggle in a frame like this to keep the flames to tell the story or portray the power of the helicopter by emphasizing it. Tough choice, both are great images. Thanks for your suggestions. I missed getting the blur in the rotors by *that* much. :-) Jul 26th
43 Jul 24 Comment Fantastic, Bruce! I have been surprised to find that shooting jets with cloudy conditions actually works out better. The lighting is not as harsh as full sun. Your sky adds just the right amount of interest without being distracting. I love the fact that you got so much detail in the cockpits. Seeing what the pilots are doing really tells the story.
Did anyone else notice that Thunderbird 5 has the number upside down in relation to the plane, but right side up for when he's doing this maneuver? I caught that at an air show last year and it cracked me up.
Well captured. The long, narrow format was a really good choice for this image. It shows off the sleek lines of the jets and portrays the speed and motion.

43 Jul 24 Comment This was well done, Harley. You made the best of tough conditions. With a bird colored like this, keeping detail is not easy. Your crop was a great choice, and really helps us focus on the bird. Agreed, the angle and time of day was not ideal, but you were where and when you were, so you did what you could with a difficult situation. I love the drop coming off of his lunch. Jul 26th
43 Jul 24 Comment I love the burrowing owls! We took a trip as part of the PSA SoCal Round Up earlier this year and we stopped to see them. You did a great job capturing this pair. Their personalities really come through in their postures and expressions. The blurred background helps them stand out and you nailed the exposure on their bodies. There is great detail from the feathers to their eyes. Great work! Jul 26th
43 Jul 24 Comment I love the mood this scene portrays. I think you were right about going to shoot in the fog. Your choice to take this image monochrome was a great one. The tonality throughout is wonderful. I like how the clarity falls off as your eye goes deeper into the frame. The dock is nice and sharp, while the elements in the background are just sharp enough to tell the story. The reflection in the foreground adds visual interest. Well done, Lane!

43 Jul 24 Comment This is a really interesting take on the subject, Bunny. You did a great job capturing the detail in the bird, including the tack-sharp eye and catch light. I'm wondering if the contrast was pushed too far in this. You want to show the texture in the bird's feathers and the stump, but the light versus dark areas is a little overcooked. To that point, I might also open up the background a little bit to get away from the pure black and show a little detail so the scene is not so stark. Other than that, I love the rich colors in the bird's feathers. The way the different dryness reflects the light also makes for an interesting variety. Nice work! Jul 26th
43 Jul 24 Comment I really like this image, Leo. The streaks of the cars' headlights add a strong compositional element as well as bringing my eyes into the image. The overall color palette carries throughout the frame and is very pleasing. I also really like the clouds among the buildings at the top. They add a wonderful moodiness to the scene. The parts of the image that are not moving are sharp and provide wonderful detail. I may not agree with the group on your use of parallax. I think it adds a compositional element that fives the image a different feel and adds interest. Great job! Jul 26th
