(ps and maybe the blue of the sky could be a bit darker to be more similar to the water color in the sand) |

Hi Bob, Beautiful beach and image! I am leaning towards the original colors with some cropping. I also feel the sharpness is better in the original. I also love the foreground and actually like the blue of the water that is similar to the blue of the sky. I also think the 2 rocks in the center are the most interesting ones. Maybe you could try cropping part of the original sky and on the left crop out the left hand side mountain. But it is a matter of taste - I tend to want to keep original colors and sky... But in this group I am learning a lot about sky options. |

Hi Cheryl, I really like the image - you were able to create something interesting and alive from an original that was not as interesting. I also like your creativity in transforming an image taken at a time of the day not ideal to shoot great images.
- Did my edit make it interesting and create more emotion? Yes it did - the twists and twirls of the branches and flowers feel alive. The image is almost surreal.
Do you like the painterly effect or not? In this case I like it - the blur generates movement I think and a dreamy atmosphere
How would you improve it? I would have kept the full branch on the left side and not cropped it so much so you would see the 2 parallel ones. And maybe I would take out the blue of the sky that distracts a bit the eye. Very interesting image. |

Hi Dan, Glad you presented an iPhone photo - these days I seem to take so many shots with it as opportunities come up when I do not have the "real" camera with me - but always feel that I could not use the iPhone images... I like the image and the narrative around it - lots of creativity on finding ways to enhance an image. The monochrome works well - and does make it more mysterious and scary. I agree with the idea of adding a subtle shadow. Great image. |

Hi Robert, Sorry for late comments - I was traveling. Another powerful image - you should definitely work on a series of images, a series from different angles would make the message of the power underneath even stronger. It is a very powerful image and I agree that the tree standing there give a sense of hope. I do think needs to have a bit more depth or show more clearly the canyon - when I first saw it I thought it was depicting a forest fire. Then I saw the crater. It has a lot of potential and you should definitely keep improving it. |

Haru,
Having been to Japan a few times I have come to appreciate the beauty and significance of the cherry blossoms, and the rocks.
1. What do you see in the image? What is the center of attention (focal point) for you in the image? The cherry blossom tree as a whole is what draws my eye.
2. Does the composition work for you? I like the composition of the tree up front with the poles, and the temple behind. The Temple and the poles give me the context, and the emotional meaning. Having lived in Washington DC many years I have seen beautiful cherry blossoms - but the temple and the poles places this tree in a different sphere.
3. What do you prefer, color or BW? I prefer the color one - the color of the flowers matters to me in this image.I do wish the color came out stronger, now it is sort of muted.

Thank you Robert for the suggestions - next time I will indeed shoot many photos of the same image when handheld! And very useful comments on the colors and how to make them more pleasing. |
