Thanks, Fran.
Now I understand the challenge of photographing dead insect or specimen. |

Haha, that's brilliant!
Thanks, Tom. It looks more alive for sure.. only that it flies upside down. I like you blurred the wings as well.. producing some sense of motion.
Thanks for the idea. Love it.

Hi Stuart,
Thanks for your comments, esp from your experience. Really appreciated.
This is my first time shooting a dead bug. This wasp is less than 1 cm long. The wings full span is about 1.5 cm wide. I was not able to shoot at 1:1 scale (with my 105mm macro). I photographed the bug on a white piece of paper and adjusted the lighting to cut down any hard shadow. No masking was required.
My biggest problem was not able to raise its head so it does not look dead. You are right, it's now just like a scientific record shot.
Yes, I will find a time next week to play around the angle and shoot from the head or side. Will share next month.
Thanks to everyone's comments and suggestions.. Big help to my learning process.

This reminds me that Summer is coming.. The white vignetting does help stand-out the centre portion of the flower. I would think this looks more progressive fading to the edges; as compared to just blurring the background. Nice neat layout structure. Good job. |

Nice composition with the 3 leaves.. I love the patterns of the rugged edges of the leaves, while the shape of the 2 water drops do not help the picture layout and structure. Looks like they are a bit out of focus anyways.. I think re-cropping the picture to present the close-up edges and bodies of the leaves could be more interesting..? Just my candid thought, not sure which way to crop is more artistic.. I love the pleasingly green colour. |

Yep.. The cropped version is better, confirming that the bee is the main subject. Very sharp image and nice compliment of colour between the bee and the flower. Great shot. |

Nice capture. To me, the bright background and the front leaf do cause some distraction. The focus is a bit soft, probably due to the very brief opportunity / window before it jumps away. I like its colour and the texture on the body. Good side-light shot. |

Very good point, Carol.
I did think of shooting from the head side, but I was worried that I might break the dry body, and ended up nothing to photograph. I would need something to put underneath so the head is more visible.
Now that I have done one view, maybe next step is to adjust and position it so it would appear more lively.
Thanks for the suggestion. |
