95 Dec 23 Comment the ice crystals is what holds my attention. there is some detail in green stem that I like also. I like black better than grey background -felt the ice could pop out more. maybe less background, maybe focus more on the stem and ice rather than red petal or less stem and closer on petal ice with minimum background. see what square looks like if we are indecisive horizontal v vertical. 95 Dec 23 Comment love the layering of feathers, good subject. this scene seems like it has multiple cropping choices... some mentioned above. left side where pheasant front/breast area is out of focus, which you can see in the uncrossed - I don't mind it if rotation and crop were a little different.... and really know it is a macro. did you take differnt views? multi color big feather at top right are nice also - they could be in a vertical alignment. lots fun patterns in these feathers. 95 Dec 23 Comment you managed to run in to get the tripod.... I can't believe the grasshopper was still there. I can understand that you probably did not have time to pick what side of the bug to be on. I love the g.hopper, the whole thing looks in focus, the whole g.h. is centered and tip of antenna to shadow of antenna is symmetrical in both ends of frames . I definitely want to brighten up the g.h and pop out those colors. Dec 19th
95 Dec 23 Comment Keith, not going to say too much because I am trying to do the same as you - I am reading the comments. agree highlights too much but I don't think that was the main thing you were working on anyways. I have been going back and for with the subject parallel and perpendicular to sensor. long exposure doesn't seem ideal. I have not attempted 1:1 macro/stacking. Dec 19th
95 Dec 23 Reply yes I will invest in a new rail not a camera. yes, right about missing sharp frames. I am not getting enough frames, I need smaller increment changes and more frames. working on it. Dec 19th
95 Dec 23 Reply that is a good idea Dec 19th
95 Dec 23 Comment flower is nice and I like the half flower effect. agree with brightening up yellow and I do see the center green come up when it is lightened up, would change that too. I see the farthest back petals with the sign of "not enough light" meaning the black streaks... that is really distracting to me because I have it when I am fixing/saving a dark original. so in this case I would go with Gloria's closer crop to get rid of unstable back petals and background. 95 Dec 23 Reply Stuart I really like your references to other articles videos, have not read them yet but I like that you are doing this! Dec 17th
95 Dec 23 Comment Carol, I have to chuckle - sounds like you took the photo was like a "mistake" and look what came out. that is like lab work.... some of the best results from failed experiments. the watercolor look is great. yellow ? it did not bother me when I looked at it- I just took it as part of the flower tone... it breaks up the scene whether that is good/bad? .... but if you do take the yellow out then I will test myself with more of an eye like stuart's... I can see the advantages also of just white/pink-red. besides the 2 big patches of yellow, I see, faint spaces of yellow tinges in the middle of the rose and if you cannot get them out they might stand out too much so better to have yellow flow thru whole flower? 95 Dec 23 Reply Stuart, I did say I stacked 5 , only sent you 3/5 above. I probably took 8-10 photo and eliminated some that offered nothing clearly focused in certain areas. I am at a low level of learning the stacking with the camera / photoshop I have. Keith mentioned what he was doing, so, I ran over to my camera manual to see if I had the focus shifting and it does not look like I have it - I am a camera level down from what he has - that focus shifting sounded better than investing in rails??? yes I do need to stick with a tripod but I actually have been finding some difficulties with that too. I am between the rail moving the whole camera and keeping camera as in place as possible and minor focus adjustment. Dec 17th
