Polly, this was at the peak of breeding season. I agree with you about the one in back looking a bit soft. I have a lot of images from this rookery and I have concluded that this is not one of the best. |

Thanks, Pam. I like the story, but I personally think there are some technical issues with it. No matter what I do I am not satisfied with it. |

Tom, thanks for your input. I think this one is going to be relegated to tier 2. It did not do well in exhibition. I have about 35 different images of these birds which at some point I hope to use for a Portfolio Distinction, but I guess this one will not make the cut. |

I think the image is very dynamic. The depth of field is perfect in my opinion. It is truly amazing to me how effectively generative AI removed the distractions and filled in the lower right corner. You know I am always explaining the allowable editing techniques for nature competitions but I realize you do not participate in those; for any other competiion or venue I think this image is a winner. I truly admire your skill in capturing and post processing nature images. Very nice work. |

This image makes me think of Monet. In my opinon you have the material here for a wonderful impressionistic image. If you have Topaz Studio you can create this efect by simply applying a "look". Or you can do it manually in Photoshop using soft brushes, filters and blending modes. I will not go into it here, but there are a lot of YouTube tutorials that you can view to learn how to do it, |

I think Mike has covered the bases as far as post processing goes, and I agree with his suggestions, so I will comment on the compositon. In my opinion the image is strong compositionally. First, I believe three subjects are always more interesting than one or two. The three form a triange which gives me a sense of stability and balance. The shape also guides my eye to the face and eyes of the sow where we see the most obvious action. This image is definitely keeper in my opinon. |

For me, this image has "good bones". However, I feel it is a little flat. To get more depth I think you might have to do some significant dodge and burn work. Mike's suggestions are a good start. If you have DxO software there is a polarization filter in Color Efex that I believe would also help the image, as well as a graduated neutral density filter that would tone down the sky. Obviously both of those filters could have been used during capture, but we don't always have the opportunity to apply them there so software lets us compensate. |

This has immediate impact for me. It may be "Yuk!" but that is a strong emotion and I believe this is a great nature story. All the eyes are sharp and there is obvious interaction. Well done my friend. |

What a wonderful opportunity...I am envious! I played around trying to envison other crops but in the end I think you made the best choice. I also think that you had a pretty good perspective (I'll bet there were a lot of photographers vying for position) because it appears that further to either the left or right you would have lost something. In my opininon it is a very nice image. My only suggestion - and I am not sure it would enhance the image - would be to slightly reduce green luminosity. Try it and see what you think. |

Thanks , I tried to folow all your suggestions and am posting the results. I am working on a portfolio of images from this rookery and was hoping this image would make the cut. But the more I work with it the less I feel it is high enough quality for that project |

Thanks, Ally. There are limits to how much the background can be darkened for images entered in Nature Salons. I have entered this in a couple, but do not have any results yet. Sometimes, if the nature story is strog enough, minor flaws are overlooked by the judges. I am hoping that is the case here. |
