52 Jan 24 Reply Ann, thantks for your comments. Regarding Swans: You are probably thinking of Mute Swans, who can be quite nasty. These are Trumpeter Swans. They are so docile the biologists pick them up in their arms and carry them around - no trnquilizer darts needed. If you would like to know more about the Trumpeters, take a look at the websit: www.trumpeterswansociety.org. Jan 29th
52 Jan 24 Comment An image I covet! I like everything about it...the detail in the feathers, the sharp eye, the position in the frame, and of course the nature story. Your post processing is spot on in my opinion. I would not change a thing...but I would enter it in Nature Divison exhibition. Jan 18th
52 Jan 24 Comment I immediately think of Alfred Hitchcock - and it is more than just the title you chose. Although I often see murmurations of blackbirds, the texture in the background and the monochrome conversion give the scene a feeling that seems ominous to me. I would suggest removing the branches that protrude in from the left to simplify the composition. Also, I am wondering about the tonal range. If you have Silver Efex take the image into that program and make sure you have pixels all across the zones. I think that will add impact. Your creative vison is amazing. Jan 18th
52 Jan 24 Comment Yellow and blue always work for me. It is a palette that suggests peace and calm in spite of the texture in the sky. I think cropping from the top is a good choise as it gets the horizon out of the middle. In a scene like this that is mostly tranquil, I believe that moving the horizon out of the middle creates just the right amount of visual tension to hold the viewer's interest. The flipping doe not make much difference in my opinion. Jan 18th
52 Jan 24 Comment To me this is a good capture of a Great egret in flight. I agree with everything Mike said about the image. However, if you want to minimize the necessary manipulation, I think you might be able to deal with the underexposure by tweaking the tone curve. I would like to pen up the shadows on the legs and feet and give the subject a little more room in front to suggest forward motion. As for sharpness - I believe you nailed it. Jan 18th
52 Jan 24 Comment As I sit here in front of my computer screen, just above me on the wall is a large print of nearly the same scene, although it is a portrait orientation. That probably causes me to be biased, but I wonder if you might try to crop on teh right to elimiate the that rock. To me, it does not add interest; just my opinion. The colors are very visually appealing to me. I think the ripple below the rock in the foreground is a good cmopositional element. I also think that, the way Mike has handled that rock brings out the texture more and holds the viewer's interest. In my opinon - no matter what you decide to do - this image is a keeper.
BTW - PSA Photo FEstival 2025 will be in Portland, OR...maybe I will get a chance to visit Bandon one more time.

52 Jan 24 Reply Judith, actually it was well below freezing when I captured this image...Arkansas has four definite seaseons an this week we are having winter...temps in single digits and about an inch of snow. Fortuately winter is very short here, but it was definitely not a warm day when I made the image, and has gotten much colder since. I appreciate that you commented on teh detail in the wings as I to thought that was a relative strngth in the image. Jan 18th
52 Jan 24 Reply Thanks for your comments, Pam. I am hoping this image will be successful in Nature competitons, so I am limited on how I may edit it. It is helpful to know that you see it as reaonably well done without further manipulation. Jan 18th
52 Jan 24 Reply Thank you Ally. As I mentioned in my reply to Mike, I intend this image for use in Nature competition where blurring the background in not permitted. The story has to stand on its own. Jan 18th
52 Jan 24 Reply I like what you have done here. However, I intend to use this image in Nature competitons where lurring the background is probhibited. I will make a virtual copy and edit it for Projected Image where this type of editing is permitted. Thank you for the suggestion. Jan 18th
