Like every other nature photographer, I also enjoyed your comment...I think wildlife is all in cahoots to keep us frustrated and coming back time after time to get the picture we have in our heads. I think you did a great job on the second edit. I am not sure if you meant that the topic for the competition was "tack sharp" which I think you have achieved, or if it is for a nature competition. If it is the latter you should keep in mind that it is not permissiable to darken backgrounds to the point where they begin to appear unrealistic. I do not think your edit crosses that line, but it might be something to keep in mind for the future, |

Hey Andrew, As you know Mike and I have been in the same Nature Study Group for a long time and we have a lot of mutual for one another - also one area of contention. It is about the limits of postprocessing on nature images. So my first question is, "What do you intend to do with this image?" If you want it for any kind of nature competition you cannot clone. But you could crop from the bottom and the right to remove some of the vegitation - especially that little bit at the far left bottom.
You definitely captured a nature story which would be a strong point, but the fact that the egret s turned away and the eye is only partially visible is, to my way of thinking a liability. You did the best you could with the way the subject presented itself...they love to frustrate us, don't they? I like what Don has done with clarity and noice reduction. |

This might sound crazy, but I feel like the light on the background is coming from the left and the light on the bird is coming from the right. Is that a result of using a flash at a low compensation, or did you do it in post processing (or am I imagining things)? The tail feathers are beautifully spread and very sharp while the wings are a bit softer, which does not bother me at all but - for purposes of my own education - where was you focal point? During the months from May 'till October I get obcessed with the hummers so anything I can learn is a plus. One last thing...I like Judith's crop becasue it gives me more of a sense of upward motion. |

I really like the mnimalist effect and, of course, I am always drawn to high key images, I like the second edit as it seems to have better visual flow for me. Since the subject is sort of soft you might want to try adding some texture. I try to think about what the classical painters of long ago would have done with this subject, and I can imagine several difernt layers of texture and color added to it to privude more interest. I might consider doing some digital pinting on the flower petals. This s all ver time consuming stuff, of course, but you are such an artist that I would bet you can take this one to a higher level. |

I have an app called iNaturalist. I ran this throug the app, and it suggested that the vegitation was Mosquito Ferns - which makes sense to me. I like that you positioned the frog 2/3 of the way across; but I wonder if the composition would be little stronger if you cropped on the top and right to get him closer to a powerpoint Try it and see what you think. |

To me this is a very visually pleasing image. The plant, I believe, is tropical milkweed - a real magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies in my experience. I agree with Mike about separating the head from the background a little more if possible. Otherwise, I would not suggest any other changes, |

I think you have done a wonderful jb with very low light conditions. The wing over the twig and the turn of the owl's head suggest to me a bit of tension...he might take flight at any moment. The feathers are sharp and the eye appers to me to be very life-like. Well done in my opinion. |

Thanks for your input, Pam. I will play around with the image some more and see if I can create an effect that is realistic but a little more dynamic. |

Thanks for your comments. I will have to give more thought to the hue of those pines. I think given the season and the light from the left the yellow is closer to how the scene actually appears. Maybe I will have to find a "happy medium." |

I am probably not done with this yet, but I think I have improved it some. What else do you think I need to do? |

Thank you, Mike. I pretty much figured this image needed more work, and you have helped me zero in on how to improve it. |
