Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
35 May 21 Comment I have a real affinity for swamps and bayous, so this image holds great interest for me. The part I enjoy most isthe reflections on the smooth water. The blue treatment is beautiful, and I would not have thougth of trying it, as these places always have a warm feeling when seen in real life. But this rendition is artistic, and for me, it works. 35 May 21 Comment After careful consideration, I think I agree with those who are in favor of removing the dark foliage at the bottom. Somehow, for me, it takes way from the feeling of light and airiness that I get from the top part of the image. The bank of clouds is interesting. I wonder if you had been able to move to the left (l know that sometimes that is not possible) and presented this in a portrait orientation with more of the tree trunk in the image if it might feel more "anchored?" 35 May 21 Comment To me this image is about texture and contrast. The fern made a worthy ir subjet and you handled the tonal range well. Julie is a master of high key images, so I think her suggstion would be work a try - maybe not to the excluson of this image, but a chance to create two very differnt looks from one subject. I also think Debbie makes a good point about removing the twigs bottom left so that the lovely little leaf is more isolated against the backgorund. I might also consider adding a vignette. May 16th
35 May 21 Comment To me this is a lovely pastoral scene, and typifies the region. It appears that you have good tonal range in this image and as far as I can tell, given the size of the image, it is well focused. I am a tiny bit bothered by the horizon being so close to center and I agree with the others that a crop on the left would be helpful. May 16th
35 May 21 Reply Thanks, Debbie. I will see what kind of texture will work with this. I usually prefer the ones in OnOne, although I have a few that I have made myself. Good suggestion. May 16th
35 May 21 Reply Thanks for your comments. See my edit based on what everyone has said. I posted it below Julie's comment. May 14th
35 May 21 Reply Helen, I have read everyone's comments and gone back to work on this. See my edit below Julie's comment. May 14th
35 May 21 Reply Thanks for your suggestions. Her is my edit based on what everyone has said so far. May 14th
35 May 21 Reply I think you are correct about the sky. In other versions I tried to replace the sky or crop it down, but wasn't happy with either choice. I may have to make a mask and play with exposure, contrast and maybe blur it some. Yes, tha that rust on the sign at the top. Thanks for your suggestions. May 9th

40 May 21 Reply Yes, that is correct...we do red from left to right. But that is not the same thing as whether or not the bird is lookiang into the frame. He looks out of the frame no matter which way you flip it. Those are two different things. May 20th
40 May 21 Comment Hi Anne. I am visiting you from Group 52 Nature Plus at Andrew's request. I live in the south and we have egrets around most of the time, so they are a frequent subject for me. The are magnificent birds and worthy subjects. Your image looks sharp to me; my highest priority in bird photography is the eye and I think you have got it spot on as far as focus goes. In my opinion, the original image works better than the processed one. I like the warmer tones better than the cool ones, and I feel that you have lost some detail in the feathers particularly on the shoulder of the bird. Since you have not indicated your lens choice or settings, I can only tell you what I have found works best with the equipment I use. First I choose the widest aperture my lens will allow. You have probably used a pretty wide aperture judging by the nice bokeh I see in the background. For a sitting bird under normal conditions I would start with ISO 800 and a shutter speed of 1/500 sec. and then check my histogram. It sounds like you are using Av mode, so your camera is choosing the shutter speed. You can adjust ISO to get the shutter speed you need. But again, the histogram will tell you what to do. Exposure compensation basiclly does the same thing. I am puzzled by your idea that flipping the image has the bird looking into the frame...I think he is looking out of the frame either way, just in a different direction. To have him looking into the frame you would need more space in front of the subject - the rule of thumb is twice as much space in front as behind. Overall, I think you have a nice capture and I would suggest you play around with the post processing more. Also, if you ar enot submitting this for a nature competition you can always add canvas in fron of the egret to have it looking into the frame. May 10th

52 May 21 Comment I think this is an excellent capture in what appears to be pretty low light conditions. The colors of the bird work well with the background in my opinon, and I think the strong diagonal of the stick give the image a dynamic feel. I woul dnot change a thing. May 16th
52 May 21 Comment The first word that comes to my mind when I look at this image is "ephemeral." I think it is like a silk screen print. The color is lovely and it works well on a white background in my opinion - very artistic. I agree with the others thorugh that at least the suggstion of a stem would improve the image...as it is it seems to be floating in space. May 16th
52 May 21 Comment I think the sotyr here is strong. Viewing the image, the first thing I notice is how sharply focused the bird on the right is. I like it's pose which suggests somthing is about to happen - fight or flight. The bird on the left is not as shape and lacks somewhat in detail. I wish I could see its eye, but when I click on the image to open it up it seems like it is a very small image. Seems like 400mm was not quite enough reach, but we have to work with the camera and lens we have, so congradulatios on capturing the story. May 16th
52 May 21 Comment Visually, I find this image very appealing. The color palette is pleasing to me, and I like the close crop. The bee appears to be very sharp all over. Your aperture choice worked well in my opinon and created a distraction free background. Overall, I think this is well done. May 16th
52 May 21 Comment Nice work capturing a moment when they are facing each other - it implies some kind of interaction may be about to occur. For me the blue sky is too intense. I would tone it down a bit if this was my image. Also, I feel that the compositon would work better if a little of the space behind the adult were cropped off - not so mucch it feels tight, but by about half. May 16th
52 May 21 Reply I posted an edit incorporating your suggestions. See it below under Lisa's comment. May 12th
52 May 21 Reply Following up on your suggstions and Judith's here is my edit. May 12th
52 May 21 Reply Thaks for your commnets Lisa. I have two other images of this bird shot at at the same time. Both of them have that same white spot. However, I think I may try to tone it down a bit since it does seem to draw attention. May 9th
52 May 21 Reply Thanks for your comments Pam. The bird's head was turned in such a way that it only caught a little of the light. I know that is a liability, but I liked the pose. I have 2 other images of this same bird, both of which have more catch light but the pose is less interesting. Since I have already edited this in ways that will make it inelligible for NAture I may consider replacing the eye in this image with the eye from one of the others.I hadn't thought about that until now. 52 May 21 Reply Thanks for your suggestions, Judith. I am thinking he may have been searching for nestin gmatierials - just because it was that time of year. I agree about the two branches at the top...it is funny I didn't notice that. It looks like they are growing out of his head. May 9th
