Hi Dan, that is such a good question. There probably is good advice somewhere on the internet but I am not aware of any. My knowledge comes from entering competitions. Certainly, tastes vary in different regions of the world and no two judges will give the same marks. That is why for example the UK PAGB Distinctions use six judges and most salons [PSA, FIAP] would have three judges. You cannot beat joining a local photographic club, preferably a large club with a good wide range of abilities to get started. |

Very pleasant image with the elk captured in their natural environment. Really get a sense of place. |

Enjoy the way the logs act as diagonals to draw us towards the eagle which you have nicely caught facing the camera. Good that you have made adjustments for highlights but the log behind the eagle is still too bright and the eagles head [whites] would benefit from better lighting. |

While timing is everything the action caught speaks for itself but the lighting is another level. Wonderful image but for competition I would want to see the rest of the bird. |

Really nice image of this heron. Compositionally strong with the heron in the foreground coming from the right with an active stance. Great lighting on the bird. Taking the shot from the same level as the bird really gives a great perspective. I might just clip a bit off the left to remove the oof object in the water but fear there is nothing you can do about the flower growing on the log. |

Stunning orchid nicely set off by the dark background. Personally I would have moved the leaves out of the image and tried to get all the flowers in. Perhaps cloning out the one on the bottom right. |
