I love this image! Normally anything centered I don't like but this bird is so symmetrical that being in the center fits! Its head and body are in perfect focus and then it seems to fade towards the fast moving wing tips. Background is non intrusive and works perfectly. Excellent image! |

Martin, being a surfer many decades back I just love this image. You can feel the adrenaline, speed, excitement, power of the ocean and possible the chilly water! It is better without the following wave though. Well done! |

Oliver, I hope everyone doesn't mind a small story. I am fortunate to winter in Key West Florida six months out of the year. We have a pier (Mallory Square) where every night hundreds if not thousands go for the magnificent due west sunsets over the water. They call it the sunset celibration. On a good night there could also be six to eight schooners between the sun setting and the many watchers. Living there we have learned the sun hitting the water and disappearing is not the end of the show. Many times five or ten minutes after sunset the sky explodes with color. I can see many feel your gorgeous image is too painterly or to vivid but be assured I have seen many many nights where mother natures vivid painterly sky is the norm. Great image Oliver. |

Tom, this is an amazing image! In my opinion it could place or win in any nature competition. There were a couple minor minor items that bothered me. I was taught that you should never have anything that extends off the frame right & left and also the leg of the larger insect is out of focus. No matter what it is an outstanding image. |

Doug, please don't shoot the critiquer! I certainly agree with you that the mountains and rock formations are magnificent. I tried many different skies and also agree with you that they detracted or just didn't do justice to this image. Finally just went with a night sky and as hokie as it may seem, it seems to work. Just don't know? |

Kaylyn, your original image has the four women smiling, happy and thrilled to be there. The dozer is amazing and location super. However everything Joseph Zaia did really makes it POP. I know it is a posed shot but excellent eye in doing so. Tack sharp. Love it!!! |

Mervyn, I hope you don't mind me asking? Were you on a boat or on the closest bit of land almost a half a mile away? Not an easy shot. Beautiful! Looks like a painting. Schooner looks like one of the Appledores? We winter in Key West, FL and one or two of the five Appledores are there each winter. |

Don, I will keep trying. Like I said this has not done well in competition. I like all of your suggestions and will definitely try them. Looking at the foliage on the right, they are distracting. Thank you so much. |

Richard, you probably have no idea how lucky you are. I haven't seen fall colors in 20 years. Really miss it! Retired in the north east and moved to Florida. Don't miss the COLD though. Gorgeous coloring of the leaves and that cloud drifting through the mountains is magic. Are they birch trees? Very well done Richard. |

Ron, I like the image showing the turbulent stream. I love the right hand third of this image and the way you brought the colorful red and orange leaves into play. Nicely done. |

Don, I like this image a lot. I am a Grunge lover anyway but in my opinion it is not overdone. Very realistic image! Like the barn offset to the right and actually being able to see through it. Makes it more interesting. You were lucky enough to have some great clouds also. Well done. |

Richard, thank you for the kind words. This image was a lot of work in Aurora HDR then photoshop but surprisingly it has not done well in competitions. Maybe a few more tweaks and I will try it again. |

Gary, Just like every car in America has different options, traits and performance every camera is also different. You have to optimize what works best for you result wise with the camera you are using.
Some cameras ISO of 400, 800 or 1600 are your max for low noise & grain. Many of the newer high-end cameras ISO of 3200 and even 6400 and higher get very little noise or no noise. I won't kid you if I could shoot ISO 64 all the time I would because of the clarity, sharpness, clean lines, crisp details, and no blurring I would. Nikon's D850 at 45.7 mega pixels has the lowest base ISO of any DSLRs or mirror-less cameras and the ISO 64 is expandable down to ISO 32.
Nikon's D850 has a native ISO of 64, allowing for wider dynamic range than cameras with a native ISO of 100. The sensor also utilizes dual conversion gain, which has the effect of preserving highlight dynamic range while increasing sensitivity. D850 is very good to 3200 and even to 6400 and higher and I can vouch for it!
Like most Nikon Pro DSLR's, the D850 offers four High ISO Noise Reduction settings: Off, Low, Normal and High, allowing you quite a bit of flexibility in choosing how you want to make the trade-off between subject detail and noise levels in JPEGs.
I look at it different if I want to make a capture to be sure it is absolutely stopped going for super sharpness I go fast. I also shoot birds all over Florida and all the way up to Maine. At time SS 1000 just doesn't get it unless you are panning.
I like my backgrounds out of focus so at times I use F/2.8 F/4 or F/5.6 and if I want everything in focus I strive for f/16, f/22, f/32. I try to get everything I can out of the camera and make it do exactly what I want. Textbook setting just don't get it.

Margaret, I thought about what you said and it was very easy to lighten the whole image. Do you think it is better? I am torn... |

Lloyd, thank you so much for your comment to lighten the Great Blue Heron. This image is in a nature competition and the deadline was tonight. I was able to lighten and submit. We shall see? Mary, thank you for your nice comment. I am normally not so lucky. Margaret, you are exactly right. This was an early overcast morning but what looks to be sky is actually swamp water in the distance and the angle of the shot. |

Jamie, I also like the soft antique feeling of this image. Background is super. I agree with Mary the shadow of the dark horse could be lightened but it does appear the light source comes from the left. Very nice image. |

My mistake Mary. I thought the food looked like broken up vanilla wafers. As Margaret pointed out natural food is accepted in PSA competitions but man made is not. |

Margaret this is a most interesting image. I read somewhere that this statue was supposed to take 30 years and and it has now taken 70. Someday it will be magnificent but I don't think we will see it in our lifetime. Excellent documentary image. |

Lloyd, I love your monochrome and I love your color image. Just my opinion both are very well done but I think the monochrome accentuates the gorgeous bridge and trees and the color accentuates Half Done and the frigid surroundings. Image positioning and sharpness is perfect. Maybe some clouds in the color image but both outstanding in my book. |

Very nice image Mary. Like the way the Chipmunks back leads you into the picture. Nice pose that shows the beauty of the animal. Like the front and back somewhat out of focus. Might crop just a bit off the right hand side still leaving room in front of his face. In some competitions anything man made is not allowed so you would have to remove the food. Other competitions it is fine. Well done. |

Cindy, I love this image. It is just soooooo interesting!!! I feel like like I should blow it up huge and search out its hidden treasures. It is a little contrasty and very sharp but it all works. This almost looks like a monochrome HDR image. Thank you for letting all of us view it. |
