This image raises a few questions about what you want an image to portray. It's dark and moody, reflecting the nature of the area and has been taken at an angle to give us converging verticals which are not always desirable. To a bit of a purist about this, I edited by straightening it up and cropping to get as much of the image as I could in frame. I also didn't like the pole on the right. I also thought, as Theresa, that the image was too dark so I set the black & white points as well. This resulted in a well corrected image that has lost the character that Tom took it for. So, we should always think about not neccessarily how to correct an image, but what the storyline is. Strangely enough, I now find myself preferring the lines of your unedited image Tom but I think it needs lightening a bit, even if you just give it a radial filter in the centre. Here's my edit - which I don't like! |

Serene is a good word for this. There's a pleasant valley between the two ridgaes on the left and right, filled with a lot of interesting rocks and pebbles. The light shines just in the right place. The fact that there's nothing in the sky doesn't matter to me because if it was an interesting sky you might be tempted to look there instead of the foreground which is much more interesting. I might have used a small curves adjustment layer to brighten the lighter rocks. |

The tree is well positioned in this shot Theresa and you've caught the sky just at the right moment. I'd like to have seen a little more light in the centre of the image to the right of the tree but it's a great blue hour shot. |

Tom's edit makes a big difference to this. However, if you were entering into a competition for nature, I'm not sure those edits would be permitted. Nevertheless - it looks better without the flowers in the background. |
