Thanks David, yes I figured it would be super hard to process and keep all those small foreground elements sharp…grasses especially |

Thanks Jim, There have been some good comments on this including what the image is supposed to be about. I didn't really consider this at the time of making it but having been challenged on it and if I got to shoot it again, I think its more about the foreground and the poles and wiring and not the background. So I would try it with a wider aperture to soften the background. |

Thanks Oliver, I think the point about headroom is a good one

Thanks Richard, partial reply in David's Thread. I need a better way to show what the focus is. Needed to shoot this at f2.8 because its probably mission impossible to soften the background in post. |

Thanks David, My focus was the decay in the posts and wires ie the foreground. Maybe the background should have been rendered out of focus a little to emphasise this. |

Many thanks everyone for your thoughtful comments. I think I could pick out elements from your suggestions to combine with my thoughts. The issue of the crop is an interesting one. I quite liked the leading line created by the wire that runs up from the right hand corner and the collapsed power pole is part of the story. |

Beautiful image Richard. Supplementing the excellent commentary already provided, I think the enhanced contrast in the sky has intensified the blue tones to an unnatural extent so I would be inclined to apply some desaturation there so that you preserve the contrast but reduce the blue. I think the suggested crop does deal with the distraction of the FG clutter. |

Great capture Oliver and going for the shot when you could have become a target of his anger. Doubt I would have done that....more likely gotten out of the situation soonest! Good idea to clone out the background and brighten his face. Its at the expense of highlighting the shiny spots so I think you could have been more selective there. I think David has done a very good job there. |

Great shot Jim and I love the processing you have done. The saturation and the subject matter supports a summer vibe but clearly it is really a gloomy day and the blue sails intensify this. I wonder if the white balance could have added some warming? |

Hi David, You find some great photo opportunities and I really enjoy them. I hope the rat is stuffed. You have found a very appropriate background to shoot him against and so I wondered why diminish it so much. Maybe just shooting wider would have softened the background and failing that doing that in post with less darkening. Just my take since the point of this is to pitch alternative ideas. You drew our attention to the eyes and I can't unsee them now...I don't think they are right but I know how impossibly hard it is to fix up eyes. Somehow they are looking in a different direction to the face. Congratulations on a great image! |

Fun capture Barbara. She is being so good holding still while the paint is applied. Quite a thoughtful pose and I can only imagine what breaks loose once the make up is completed. The selection is not so good and my thought was being less ambitious about replacing all the background. For example leaving the hair and surrounding background untouched and just cloning out the brights and softening other parts. |
