I think the mono is much better because as Somdutt says there is a colour clash otherwise. I think placing the inset is a brilliant idea. However I'm not a fan of the edging of the main photo, but I like the slightly fuzzy black line round the inset image. I did wonder whether there was too much sky in the background photo but you need plenty of space to make sure the two together have a similar format. |

I love this one in colour! It just seems to look so old fashioned and bleak -that people still have to get firewood like this. I appreciate that it is a lifestyle choice, but in this day and age when we should not cut down any more trees and when you consider what small particulate matter does to one's lungs when burning wood indoors, then this should be on it's way out. Its a great picture . I think there is more detail in the horses in the colour version. |

There is a good triangle of people here though the guy on the left is rather bigger than the other two. The facing man and the item being carried take the eye as they are lighter than everything else. Yes there is a halo round the big guy so you'd need to work on getting rid of it. It's a shame the man on the right seems to be stepping out of the picture. I'm always amazed that roofers walk with such insouciance round sloping roofs. I'd be scared to move! |

I agree that the background has gone a bit OTT for brightness. However the leopard walking with a raised paw is good. I'd crop the two darker areas at the top on both corners as they detract from the cat. The mono is better than the colour. |

I think that if you wanted to enter this, then it would need some dramatic treatment to make it stand out in some way. As it is, it would get the dreaded middle mark which doesn't get acceptances. It is interesting historically and would make a talking point in a sequence of shots illustrating Alcatraz. The building doesn't look very inviting for living in and I suspect the foliage is post prison use. |

I can't decide whether it is better to have the window light streaming in or not. I like the increase you did Ed but I thought there was then a division of interest between staircase and windows. I think you have to decide which is the main focus of your image and then go for that, It is such a weird staircase and background and I think there are probably lots of different angles to take it from. |

Yes I think you are probably right to crop some of the sky. It makes the building more dominant. |
