I still use Classic, though I admit I now use Lr as my starting point before going into Ps. One problem now is the normality of using AI as shown by people telling you how to use Lr and Ps. Our competitions do not allow AI at all so it is annoying when techniques are shown using it.
I am in the process of watching Aaron Nace on PHLEARN - Lr in 30 days-and he is very good at explaining all the things available but then he shows AI use as well as if it was the best thing since sliced bread. PSA and FIAP etc both ban its use. |

Scott Kelby books are very good as he explains things well, but I admit that I find him rather boring to listen to! |

I often don't know when to stop when I'm doing montages, so probably it would be better without the water drop hammer. However, just having the smoke demon didn't seem to tell enough of a story. I wanted a face which looked unreal and without any emotion showing.
I have to admit the title came after I'd finished, so obviously I didn't start out with a complete idea of what I was intending to do. Like Topsy, it just grew! |

Nowadays straightening buildings is not nearly as difficult as it used to be. There are so many ways to change perspective in Ps. The only problem is losing part of the picture. |

So how did the colour tinge manage to appear if you turned it to mono? What technique did you use? |

A pet Black widow sounds horrendous to me. The name says it all! |

That has made a huge difference and rescued the image completely. I must get to grips with Topaz |

I usually like a contrasty sky, but I think maybe this has gone too far as it competes with the subject of the castle. |

I haven't seen too many using fisheye lenses lately, so maybe they have gone out of fashion. |

That's easy to remedy - I can tweak the nose and the smoke.
The imagination sometimes gets the better of me and I end up adding too many elements. I have to be in the right mood to create. |

Interesting that Wes likes the portrait and Tom and Ed like the colour image. I thought the colour version had too many colours so they detracted from the form. I've already used the mono portrait here some years ago, so couldn't use it for this month.

This does work in mono -probably better than in colour as the red flowers are so bright and attract they eye. Looking at the first mono you've done a good job of skin softening on her neck and face, though maybe the processing is what had made them a bit grungy to start with as it isn't apparent in the colour version. I agree with Steve, that there does appear to be a tinge to the red flowers, which I don't quite understand.
This is a good photojournalism style of portrait. I like pictures where people are doing something. |

I agree completely with what you've both said about IR and people who take the the photos because they have the camera . Carol was an expert with IR and she partially converted me to appreciating them, but she was careful in what she took. This mansion suits the medium. As Steve says - a white building against a black sky makes it stand out and almost look like an iced cake! The foliage does not detract from the subject. |

The problem is that the spider looks fine through the viewfinder but it isn't good when blown up later as it develops so much noise and shows up every tiny imperfection. Could you have used a tripod or something to rest the camera on? How close can you get with your camera and still focus? You haven't given any info on the settings -can you alter the ISO? Going down to as low as possible on the ISO would give the best result even if you had to change the shutter speed to give the greatest aperture possible. The spider probably wasn't going anywhere as long as you didn't put your shadow over it or breathed on it. Many critters are sensitive to carbondioxide so retreat if breathed on. As for me, I'm an arachnophobe so I would not have been anywhere near. To take this, I would need a telephoto lens! |

I agree with Somdutt that it is too tight in the frame. I haven't done handheld panoramas recently but I believe that Lr does work well with them. I use a mono pod for stability and I've always got it with me as it also acts as a walking stick. You know that I like a more contrasty sky, although I think the contrast on the building is pretty good. The moat looks good but I'd darken the right hand bottom corner down. |

The figure acts as a focal point for the image but it also prevents one's eye moving past it to the base of the Mall. It points to the ceiling, which actually is really interesting. The distortion doesn't matter since no-one know exactly what the original looked like and with your camera angled up slightly, there is a perspective effect anyway. I like the mono conversion but I feel maybe you should darken down the very light part of the arch at the topframe edge. I like the way the clouds have been rendered through the glass. |

Thank you! I just love 'playing' with images. I get many failures where the end product doesn't seem quite what I was after. Lots of people don't like them and they don't usually do anything in competitions but they are done more for me -or for a specific theme competition- than for run-of-the-mill Internationals. I think I'm out of phase with the sort of montage pictures that other people produce. I must have a weird mind! |
