Happy New Year!
I really like this because it is such a graphic design. I like the starkness of the white against the black and find I can't take my eyes off both although I keep coming back to the overlapping central point. |

Portraits are a new venture for us. Someone was retiring from being a professional photographer of branded items and was looking to give away his equipment. No-one seemed interested and then I heard about it and immediately said 'yes please' so we ended up with 3 proper portrait lights on tripods, a couple of umbrellas, and a stand with one backdrop. It was a fantastic acquisition for our club. One of our members had bought umbrellas and flash guns with good tripods so we have been able to set up portrait sessions with two lots happening on either side of the back drop. We have a large black backdrop designed for something else which is why it is a bit thin but works quite well. Everyone who has come had had a very enjoyable evening and we are beginning to find out how to set up and then pose our models. Someone brought her grand daughter to be a model and that worked very well and for the rest we muddle along, using whatever props turn up on the night. It's worth it and also helps new people to become part of the society. Great fun!

You're right-I should make sure the whole of the sword is visible. |

In some ways, the strap points towards the sword so maybe better left in. |

I wasn't sure whether taking them out made too big a gap between the hand at the bottom and the face or if they were too distracting. What about removing the strap but leaaving the hand? |

I like pattern pictures like this as well, but unlike Stephen, I didn't like the vignetting at the top. In fact, I cropped the top to get rid of it and concentrate on the dune itself. In fact I'd take a little off the bottom to reduce the dark shadow on the left corner although I understand that it helps to give shape to the dune form. I have some very similar images when we visited the Great White dunes in America and the sun/clouds obliged with drifting patterns across the sand. |

This has worked well and I'm sure will get acceptances in Internationals. Have you thought about cropping at the bottom to remove the edges of the planks? They are clearly unaware of the camera pointing at them which is why it works. |

I like the symmetry and initially I didn't even think about the problem of the double lighting. Actually I don't think it matters because you've made such a good final patter picture. I would be tempted to remove the bright reflections on both sides if you can but it will be a fiddly job. You've successfully taken out the person so go for it! |

The wings are lovely but you are losing the definition on the legs as they overlap so in this case I feel it may be better left as a colour. Why does the sky always have to be so uninteresting when you get such a good shot. It kills the final image unfortunately. Like Jennifer, why not abandon this as a nature shot and give it a different background for a pictorial image? |

I think what you need to do is remove the elephants completely from their zoo background and put them somewhere else! You wouldn't be able to use as a nature shot but it would make a pictorial image. As it is, it won't get anywhere in an International I'm afraid. I've had a go but not chosen a very good background. the elephants are still too contrasty as well, but you get the idea!
