31 Aug 24 Comment I like this viewpoint. Having seen many shots taken of these groynes, this one is different. This may be because you have the sandy, watery bit in the foreground. Well done Ian! Aug 7th

32 Aug 24 Reply Your comment re choosing to jump off a horse made me laugh. Coming off a moving horse for me was a mistake rather than a choice! Aug 28th
32 Aug 24 Reply I waited till most people had gone but with the rain, there were probably more indoors than out.
I think this is altogether too complex a picture but I might try it out a couple of times and see what the response is.

32 Aug 24 Reply OK, now you tell me I can see it is a flag. That said, I would still remove it! Aug 25th
32 Aug 24 Reply I agree that it needs a keyline when it is to be shown on monitors for critique. Aug 25th
32 Aug 24 Reply I like the use of the 'negative space' on the right. It helps to show the size of the bear in its environment I think. Aug 25th
32 Aug 24 Reply Good point! So maybe better for a local competition and not an International. Aug 16th
32 Aug 24 Reply Thanks Manel. Aug 15th
32 Aug 24 Reply I don't think you can change the shape afterwards. I think this shape is produced because of the upwards arch of the thorax and the downwards position of the head. It will always produce this effect with a slender model. It just doesn't appeal to me. I feel the stress of her muscles in my body! Aug 15th
32 Aug 24 Comment Why anyone would even think of doing what you say he is about to do, is beyond my understanding! How crazy can people get?

It is a good shot and must have been hard to get. I like the lack of adverts, people etc which usually fill the background. Just having the white fence posts is fine. The man's arm on the left is fading into the background and needs bringing out a bit. I also thought the calf was a bit too bright-it has a bit of colour originally so shouldn't be quite so white in the mono version.
Could you do a slight crop off the top edge so that the pictures finishes in the black area -that would help bring one's eye down to the subject. I might also try darkening the reins muddle on the far right edge.

I want to know how the guy manages to get his right leg over the back of the calf as that is between the two animals at the moment. When we used to ride, it was difficult enough just mounting from a mounting block while the horse stood still. I can't imagine transferring from one animal to another while both are leaping around.

32 Aug 24 Comment I like both the colour and the mono and I wouldn't know which to use in competitions. Don has also altered the mono so now you have two to choose from and both have their good aspects. I might darken the section of the arch at top left as it is on the edge of the frame and draws the eye outwards. Otherwise, I think this is a great architectural shot. Aug 15th
32 Aug 24 Comment Interesting background information. I like it when we know what we are looking at, though obviously the images have to have appeal even without the information.
I like the colourful carpets showing in the original, though converting to mono has reduced the grunginess of the slide shot. The sky still shows a lot of grain and I think this could do with a bit more fuzziness introduced. There are also a couple of dust spots , especially the one immediately above the rock. I do find the shadows are rather heavy due to the contrast of the sunny original and I'm not sure how you can effectively improve this.
I didn't notice the cyclist initially but I agree with Somdutt, that he provides scale.

32 Aug 24 Comment Yes beautiful. I shall have to revisit my polar bear pictures and see if I can produce a high key image. When we visited Svalbard, we saw quite a number of bears, but often at a distance, though we spent one morning in a Zodiac, floating slowly along with one bear as it ate seaweed at the edge of the rocks. It was a young bear which hadn't moved north with the ice melt so was extremely hungry.
On my monitor the right side of the bear's back does disappear in to the snow, whereas I can see the left side. I can't decide if this is OK or whether you need to bring back a faint outline on the right.
This is a lovely delicate shot and the tongue and muzzle are beautifully rendered.
Superb!

32 Aug 24 Comment I agree with Stephen that the butterfly does seem to merge with the spiky parts of the flower. I'm not worried about the leaf to the right as it is grey and almost merges with the background. I like the bright edge to the front leaf. I'm not sure that butterflies work well in mono as we expect them to be colourful entities. I also agree with Somdutt especially if you are going to enter this in International competitions. British salons always prefer more space around the subject, though we do like colour originals for these sort of images. I would keep the background dark. Aug 15th
32 Aug 24 Comment Now I am going to introduce a note of criticism here. I found the two 'hummocks' to the right of her breasts a bit strange. I accept that they are her ribs showing up because of the arch of her back, especially because her breasts have flattened out and fallen upwards on the body, but this has distorted her normal shape. I also found that my eye kept slipping down to the arch of her back, which highlighted just how thin she must be.
I'm sorry but I prefer the human body to look elegant and not to be so distorted. I love smooth lines - which you have- but I feel the shape should not be stressed looking. Maybe it would be more appealing to me if the body wasn't with the head downwards.
The lighting is very good again and the texture of the skin is lovely. I understand how the others approve of the diagonal line but the overall effect of tipping the body with the head downwards, doesn't produce a good shape for me!

32 Aug 24 Reply 17mm but I was using the 12-40mm zoom lens. This was again to reduce the amount of equipment I had to carry on a very rainy day. Aug 15th
