The drainpipe was a nuisance as it was so close to the window. I didn't like it but I also didn't want the window to be too close to the edge of the frame. Perhaps I should have cloned it out and left brickwork on the edge instead.
The weirdness of the steampunk outfits is what attracts especially when put against the normality of everyday objects or beautiful blossom. What is also hard is getting a photo where the person isn't simply facing the camera in a record shot. |

This treatment is good for historical buildings of this era and you could make a whole book of similarly treated places which would then hold together well.
If Johnson's family was an immigrant one where did his American name come from? |

Yes we used Helicon focus but it was always prone to introducing odd artefacts. Stacking is so easy especially on the Olympus as long as you are careful to keep the subject within the borders as you take it. It is quick and the only failure I had was when I tried to use flash and didn't get the timing/ strength right with the flash. I haven't tried that again because it works just as well to open the aperture and change the shutter speed. |

I'm not sure it is worth colouring it sepia as Steve already has the brown/gold tints in the original version. I just feel that this is not one for mono when the colour is so much better! |

Although it is a habitat photo, I suspect it wouldn't do anything in salons because nowadays so many of the ones which win are close-up shots of insects, or animals in Africa tearing apart their prey. Also, birds which have been baited to approach do very well, so a truly wild animals just seen across a grassy area is not going to stand up by comparison which is a shame. |

This is one my Mother used to recite to me when I was little so it brings back good memories. |

Although the verticals are vertical, there is an odd optical illusion on the right hand side where the section beside the building appears to widen towards the top. I'm not sure what you could do to correct it-maybe a skew or perspective tweak? Actually I don't think this needs more contrast-you've got it about right. Whether it is strong enough for a salon or not is a moot point. because you have 4 lamps and 3 heads there are two areas of interest and this detracts from the overall impact. I've found architecture sections in salons usually need to be very strong and often of iconic subjects or they don't do well. |

Yes that is a good idea. A subtle sepia works well because it appears to restore some of the brown of the horse. Thanks

I'm still not sure which is best. I like the warm tones of the colour and I think the figures stand out from the tree and the blossom, but when I look at the mono, the detail on the man seems better but the horse looks so grey and dull which it doesn't seem to in the colour because of the warmth. |

Outlandish indeed. A lot of the outfit was leather so at least he was dry that day but what about on another day when the sun shone? He would have been baking hot! Many steam punk people add to their outfits year after year as they find things in charity shops or at carboot sales. There are also lots of online sites selling all sorts of things. We went to a steam punk day which had stalls full of really strange home made items. We've only just started going to some of these events and so far have resisted dressing up to join in, but they are really friendly days and everyone is delighted to tell you how their outfits have developed gradually.
The main problems at this event were the drizzly rain and the difficult backgrounds so many of my pictures will never see the light of day or else they will have to become part of montage images. |

The nuts look as if they are floating -a weird effect! I like both colour and mono versions. i tried cropping small amounts from both the bottom and the left side but couldn't decide it that improved the shot or not. It's a bit like all those images that Steve submitted. The lighting changes from front to back. Should the brightest one be at the front? |

This is another shot where I prefer the colour version. The original has lovely warm tones which are gone in the mono -it has become too contrasty. The foreground figures and the skyline have become nearly silhouettes and there is a huge gap between the two. That doesn't matter in the colour because the lighting on the water is beautiful. In the mono, my eyes keep flipping from the people to the overbright sun but this doesn't happen in the colour because there is interest in the water. |

How lucky to see a wild tiger! The camouflage certainly makes it hard to pick out the tiger from its surroundings but I prefer the colour version. The mistiness gives a very good feel of early morning and I like the fact that the tiger seems unaware of you. In the mono version, I tried cropping some of the white sky but it didn't work at all. I think you are right that this isn't a good subject for mono mainly because of the soft lighting and similar tonal range throughout.
Did you see any more tigers at all? |
