I think I'd want a high clearance vehicle to be certain it was OK and I think nowadays I'd find the bumpy ride a bit hard on the joints! It's always a nerve wracking situation when one leaves a tarmaced road for a trail like in Iceland where they also have fords which change constantly and fill up with ice and snow melt. |

I left the middle part a bit lighter than the top and bottom but if you think the stones could go darker, that is easy to do. |

Yes that is very true. We do like space and also reading from left to right so flipping this one as well. |

I am constantly surprised at how good your conversions are from slides. I look at mine and they don't seem to have the crispness that yours do. Can you briefly tell us what you use for the conversions?
I wasn't sure about the bottom half of the shot and I tried cropping off all the base so that the attention is fixed on the details of the skyline and the interlocking spurs of rock.
I think I'm beyond heading out into this sort of wildness nowadays! Rather too scary! |

I like the detail of the rope and I agree that the image is better reversed. I tried cropping off the left to remove most of the out of focus foliage area and then darken the remaining part as suggested and I think that would work. Steve is right in that it is distracting, even though you've got it quite dark.
You said it was an old military item, but what actually was it on? I can't think what the military were doing. |

Re the question of mono or not- it is a mono image but would probably always be rejected in an International competition as most rules specify black and white. You'd need to read the specifications very carefully!
I would have liked to see this taken without the shadow on the left. The side lighting brings out the detail of the panel but the shadow detracts from the whole image. I know it isn't always possible to be at a site at precisely the right time for the best shot but it would improve it.
You did a good job of straightening the whole panel.

I agree with you -balancing on one leg is much less steady but maybe that's to do with my age and infirmity and I don't have to hunt for food!
I like the ripples in the water and the distortion. You've got good detail in the feathers plus a catchlight. Stilts are not easy-black and white makes for problems with exposure in sunlight so well done.
My only criticism is that the bird is very central and I wondered why you chose a vertical format. Do you have a horizontal format with space in front of the bird? I think that would make a more pleasing, pictorial shape. |

You say you like the shadows but they are not what I see when I first look at this picture. My eyes go to the struts of the roundabout and the two circles on the right. I think we are more likely to look at bright lights than to look at darker areas. I think if you want the attention on the shadows at the bottom, you'd need a dramatic crop off the top to make us look downwards. It is a very busy scene and there are lots of interesting areas for study. The chairs on the left which are brightly lit are one part: the tilted circles on the right are another: the chair shadows at the bottom: and finally, the struts of the main carousel. Lots to play with here! |

I thought maybe the officer had the clean face because he is after all the OFFICER! The other guy, with the dirtier face is the one who does the soldiering so gets dirty.
No, we don't have any veterans in the club -we are actually all too young to have been forced into the Services and no-one has a background like that -we aren't like Americans where you acknowledge Servicemen. |

Wow! Thanks! I'd decided not to use it because everyone was so critical! I had thought it was actually OK so I was a bit surprised. I'll transfer it back to my usable file. |
