The face does have some bright areas but I think i shall abandon this shot unless I get very desperate.

I'm not sure what lighting you were using. Was it just the general room light or did you try adding some fill-in flash? I'm not normally a flash fan but in this venue I think a diffused flash might have helped to extract the artist from all the distractions around him. I'm not sure what you were aiming for when you took it-an impression of the busyness of the fair with people all squashed together--both artists and visitors, or a portrait of the artist intent on his painting? I've seen some good flash shots recently where people have used diffused flash successfully so there aren't hard shadows behind them but which lighten the main subject matter. And yes, the plate needs something doing about it! |

We have quite a lot of steam traction engine shows in Britain though we don't often go to them. They are frequently part of the annual county shows. They are impressive machines and can usually be useful for photos. I normally take the whole engine and then try for parts of them -like the wheels or the engine parts and then get the driver to pose pretending to load coal etc. There are always fans of the engines around and small children polishing the metal can be good. The backgrounds are a problem and mono is a good way of dealing with them. You could always try reducing the colour of the background and leaving the machine in vibrant colour but not for this group. |

Lots of comments here! I preferred the colour over the mono when I first looked, but having seen Tom's single red one, I transferred my allegiance to that. The red had stood out for me in the colour anyway. My eye just jumped around in the mono one, although the increase in contrast does improve it. I might have been tempted when taking it, to turn round the ones with names except for the Woo name to increase its impact. Nice one! |

I wasn't sure about the palm tree growing out of the back of the car so I found the botanical background a bit distracting. I found the crop at the front too tight as well but I do like the low viewpoint emphasising the 'teeth' of the radiator grille. If you had stepped to the left one pace would that have got rid of the other car , putting the headlamp and bumper in the centre of the image instead of the wheel arch? The shadows of the trees have meant that there aren't too many highlights on the shiny bits which is a benefit of the venue. |

I like the couple together -I presume they are a mated pair. It gives more information to the nature shot than just a portrait of a single crane. I agree the straw needs toning down, especially the highlights. I do like the background water as the out of focus movement provides a good foil to the sharpness of the birds. I actually don't like the blurring that Tom suggested as it is too big an area for this. However I think your photo is a success with a little tweaking. |

I agree with all the comments so far about the second flower head. Could you have given a bit more space at the top of the image and perhaps a bit less at the bottom so the leaves were cropped a little? The texture of the well lit front blossom is gorgeous. |

Our club doesn't have anyone really interested in portraiture and really neither do I. However when I'm at a PSA conference and they organise a session, I go along and try. I do usually get some usable pictures, but not when everyone is pushing and shoving which happened that year. This year was much better as there was more time and I could talk to the models. |

I had problems with her skin as she had a lot of freckles. Judging by the comments I think I should give up on studio model shots! |

You've said much the same as Steve to whom I've put a reply and I agree with both of you. |

Yes -this is what I usually feel about studio shots. She was faced with a whole bunch of people taking her photo and there wasn't any interaction between us and her. This last conference was better organised as we took it in turns to take photos and could actually talk to the models and since the session went on all day , there were periods when no-one else was around and I took time to engage them in conversations and got much better pictures as a result. |
