The other problem was that we were out with my family and I didn't think I could hang around waiting for the perfect person shot. It was taken quickly, just balancing the camera on the safety barrier so I could catch up with the rest. |

I agree that a hair line would help a lot. Whoever arranged the lighting needed to have a softbox to reduce it and maybe take it further away from the model. This might be fine for a man but it's too hard for a beautiful woman. Perhaps you could try softening the face in Nik. |

And I waited until the people had all gone! Actually it was quite dark so I thought they would be too blurred and wouldn't work. I could try putting someone in but I'd need to find another escalator to get a person from above. Tricky! |

I think the harsh lighting was not right for this model as it has brought out every imperfection in her skin. I tried unsuccessfully to clone some detail into her forehead, but without my usual skin softener I couldn't get it right. She has a great direct connection with you and i like the darker clothes and hair framing her face. |

I agree with Stephen that the image needs increased contrast. It looks allover too grey on my monitor but Stephen has brought out the whiteness of the clouds more and the cross becomes better separated from the church. In fact I would go even further and make the contrast more dramatic as the clouds could easily stand it. Without my plugins which vanished with my latest Ps update, I can't access Nik, so I have simply increased lightness and contrast in Ps and I think this makes the image stand out well. |

I thought it looked like Amsterdam when I saw it and hadn't looked at the title. I agree that a small crop off all round would enhance the focal point of the picnicking family. I also felt the trees behind were too much all the same so I used dodge and burn to increase their contrast. I produced a slight vignette effect the same way. The rule of thirds does usually work effectively. |

What do you mean, you used to have milk delivered? I still do! In fact my milk comes in bottles very like this. Very few people still have deliveries as they go to the supermarket and buy large quantities in plastic, but I prefer milk which doesn't taste of plastic.
Now to the picture. I don't think there is enough to hold the interest for long. This partly because the bottle is a single central feature, and with such a stark background there is nothing else to put it into context. I do like the slight dirtyness on the glass and you've done well with the lighting, which gives it a feeling of smoothness and roundness. Could you set up a more complex image with the bottle and something else from the past? Perhaps a glass of milk beside it? I do like having a 1 or 2 pixel line around these sort of black background shots so they are separated from the surroundings.
Apologies for not commenting sooner. |

Sorry it has taken me so long to comment. I've read what the others have said but I'm not sure what you mean by 'high art' When I want something under this heading, I go to Nik and choose the fine art preset, but since updating Ps and Lr, I have lost all my plugins and haven't managed to restore them yet. I had a go at changing your image using an adjustment brush in RAW to lighten the central area and darken the outsides more but I don't know whether this is what you were after. I agree that the two front animals need cloning out as suggested, because then the eye is drawn only to the one figure and his dog. |

Quick answer is I've no idea! I could lighten it or chop it off whichever suits. Just back today from the SLC conference so totally jetlagged and computer was sulking and needed our son's efforts to persuade it to work again. I will think about this photo when i feel more awake and check what I actually did. |
