That's what I thought you wanted. jennifer's changes emphasise Pat so they give a different feel to the photo. She stands out much more. |

I agree -making it look like a studio portrait from a nature one is clever. |

No entirely sure! I have two -one home made with polystyrene 'beads, which is very light but not very secure as it is too light. The bought one is much more solid and I've never investigated the contents. However the book with it tells me I can empty it for traveling and buy rice when i get to my destination and refill, this cutting out weight in the suitcase. However, I haven't done this yet and it might be a good idea to experiment with fillings. I think rice would be better than beans as it would allow hollows to hold the camera. It needs weight so it can hang over a window frame. A friend made one with 3 sections -two heavy on each side and the central one separate from the other two where the camera sits. Again would be good if it is possible to empty for travel. I have used mine in Canada for bear photos and here for birds and animals very successfully. It's the car window problem which is difficult as modern cars are hard to stop the closure at exactly the right height.

Exactly so! Your photos should be because you wanted to take them. If a judge also likes them, then that is a bonus. |

I agree that disembodied arms are not good and I hate heads which float in blackness with no support but I didn't like the light arm on the edge of the photo which is why i cropped it off. It also put the face slightly offcentre which I preferred. It's swings and roundabouts! Do Americans understand that allusion? |

i also think that what Tom did was a good effect. It depends on what you want to do with the image as to what you can do. If it was intended for PJ comps, then you can't change it like this. if you want it s part of a sequence of pictures illustrating what happened during the day and what people did, then Tom's approach is good. Pat can't object to the changes because they only affect the background and there's enough there to see them. |

I like the low viewpoint but I think it needs an even close crop because I find the small areas of sky top right are too distracting. I cropped them off and then because the words on the windscreen showed up too much, I put a dark vignette round the edge. It makes the radiator grille really become the important part. |

I like what you've done Tom, but you need to be careful if doing this for a competition. The base of the statue is sharp between his legs and on the right and blurred on the left. Apart from that, you've done the best thing to make the guy stand out. I would try lightening the face a bit more as well. |

I've also had problems with my images not projecting as they look on my monitor. We have a projector now so we can see them before we send them off -at least we will be able to when we get it set up permanently. Re the sharpness of the bird, were you using a bean bag on the car window? If the engine is off a quality bag can make all the difference to a shot. You probably need to have the window partially open so it's at a convenient height for the camera. Old style window opening handles were great because they didn't need the engine on to change the height. I think you've done a good job extracting the bird from the background and i think it works as a mono. |

i agree that there is too much of the environment showing for it to be a purely emotive shot. I also think Tom is right -the bright area top right draws the eye away from the bird. The brightest area should be in front of the bird so remove the top ones and lighten the bottom ones. i would try cropping from the top so the bird ends up in the top of the frame looking down at the bright clouds. Now whether the judges would 'see' what you are trying to do is another matter altogether! |
