32 Mar 18 Reply Yes I do have CC 2018 so I will do as you say. Mar 27th
32 Mar 18 Reply I am always saying the Americans are completely different in every way to Brits! People divided by a common language which actually isn't so common! Did you like what Carol did to my picture of Cara? We had a portrait session at a previous PSA conference which was superb. The models were accommodating and the backgrounds provided were pastel and blobby with a random pattern. It made for excellent pictures which worked in colour and mono. I've never had to extract the models from the shots and put them somewhere else. They also had entirely suitable clothes without eye catching zips or ornamental bits so the faces were the important bits. Re Carol's comment, we have some fairly blunt society members but since we are all supposed to be friends we take it with a pinch of salt and give as good as we get. I do agree that comments should be constructive and not just along the lines of 'I don't like it'. In the end, we took the picture and presumably that's how we wanted it to look, though we might be asking for help to improve it. Mar 27th
32 Mar 18 Reply Once Jennifer pointed the white area out I was suddenly noticing it and I agree that a bit of detail would be good. However, I hadn't seen it before because the nose, eyes etc were so dominant. Mar 27th
32 Mar 18 Reply I like this shed. has it done anything ever in competitions or do judges not like sheds? Mar 27th
32 Mar 18 Reply I thought this had gone a bit too far in the detail and contrast, though I agree it needs a small amount more. Mar 27th
32 Mar 18 Reply I agree that she is too dark. It went that way in my attempts to remove the background. I like the vignette one you did as well because the grey is almost too bland. Now I'll have to find a surefire way of extracting her from her background which I've never been good at. Mar 27th
32 Mar 18 Reply Don't be upset -I think Stephen was referring to my comment on my own picture where I said the guy meant to be helping us take some portraits actually brought what I thought were not good backgrounds for portraits as they were very strongly patterned or folded so the edges showed up. if they had been pastel shades or smoothly crumpled they would have been much easier to cope with. They would have been better if they had been plain and not patterned or else a random pattern.
I think your background shows less in the mono though it is more apparent in the colour. I'm sure Stephen didn't mean to give a put down staement so I hope you will stay with us.

32 Mar 18 Reply Yes time does help but I also understand the problem of making enough time to work on a photo -too often I'm doing things at the last minute and the work gets rushed. Now you have the new computer, everything will work properly and quickly and you'll be ahead of the game. Mar 23rd
32 Mar 18 Reply I will try to remember to look in sometimes, but I forget which numbers to look at. i do like mono a great deal so I'll try. Mar 22nd
32 Mar 18 Comment It all goes to show that it is the photographer and not the camera which makes the difference. I find studio shots very hard as you can tell from my portrait of Cara. I dislike the background in yours as in mine -much too noticeable whether in colour or mono. I think you could lighten the face a bit more especially at the hairline and as Carol always suggests, lighten the whites of the eyes -very carefully-so they remain natural looking but stand out more. 32 Mar 18 Comment I love this image but then I really like cats. It has produced a beautiful shot and i would happily have this on my wall. Whether it would do anything in competitions depends where you enter it. In GB, it probably wouldn't get anywhere as our judges tend not to reward domestic pet pictures, but I think it would do well in the USA where they seem to be appreciated. I love the effect and I intend to have a go when I get a decent picture of my cat I haven't got AKVIS but I'm sure there are Ps or Nik presets which would do similar effects. Mar 22nd
32 Mar 18 Comment I agree with Oliver that the pole on the left is distracting and I would get rid of it -crop or clone, depending on whether you are going to enter PJ comps or not. I also wondered whether the furthest chair on the far right could go as it is a bit dark and without it the attention is kept on the man, his work and his sign. I think you need to lighten the man's face as unfortunately it is in shadow and what stands out is his stripy shirt. This is a PJ shot. Mar 22nd
32 Mar 18 Reply Hi to Oliver -have fun with your new mono group. Mar 22nd
32 Mar 18 Comment I like old sheds too. However, I wondered whether the brightness of the front is too much, as it seems to have lost detail there especially on the left. Putting a wide border round it seems to have merged into the base so it almost looks as if the bottom isn't there. Perhaps a narrower border wouldn't do this. I found the left foliage area too dark for my liking -there's no detail there.

I also like playing with Nik presets and I wondered what a sepia toning would have done to this. Is the image better without the sky at the top which is rather bright?

32 Mar 18 Comment Good shot! I felt that you had lost detail in the right hand dark wing, but maintained the detail on the left side. You've also produced a slight halo effect especially round the wings. I actually prefer the colour version with a bit more work done on it to bring out the dark wing detail. The vegetation is fine in the colour one though more obvious in the mono. You couldn't take it out anyway if you wanted to use in Nature comps. Mar 22nd
32 Mar 18 Comment I wondered whether the mannequin on the left should be cropped off. I know the kiosk would then be cut through as well but I found he drew my eye. i agree with Stephen that the line of mannequins would be stronger if you had moved to your right a little, although the action in the front is the important part. I agree that you have managed the lighting well but it is a very busy scene and may not appeal to everyone. Mar 22nd
32 Mar 18 Reply Absolutely agree with you re the background. I was very annoyed and wondered whether the guy setting up intended for us all to get difficult pictures. He was supposed to be a portrait photographer and had all the gear, but his backgrounds were all horrible. Mar 19th
32 Mar 18 Comment I don't remember much of that. There were two soft-boxes linked to flashguns from the front, but no light on the back. They were probably 3 feet from the model. Yes I was able to interact with Cara as there were several models with different lighting and backgrounds so photographers moved around and it was possible to wait your turn and then use the flash trigger. In fact Cara was a good model though inclined to purse her lips and look a bit haughty. It did suit her though. I probably only had about 5 or 10 minutes before someone else wanted to have a go. I was able to ask her to move and look towards me or away. One of the other models in a different set up was good but her clothes were not so good for photos-zips showed up too much. Mar 5th
