I like it too because I like patterns. I think this is very striking and the toning has helped. You do live in a wealthy part of the world! |

I like the crop as well and the increased contrast made all the difference. |

Thanks. Our own club judge gave me a low level award and I've now darkened the left side and entered it in an International. |

It's not a tree!. It's the archway of an old building so it's stonework. |

The shot is a little soft on my monitor so maybe it could do with a bit more sharpening. I like the close crop and turning it to mono is good for his bristly chin. I also like the facial expressions from Eddy Izzard and woman. Could you work on this some more-and crop in to just those two? I agree with Carol that the eyes need lifting with a catchlight and lightening the whites of his eyes just a small amount-not enough to look artificial. However if you want this for PJ, then you can't add stuff. |

I'm so jealous as we didn't get good Amish pictures when we were in the US. however we did take some horse and covered wagon emerging from a covered bridge, set up for us on one of the PSA Conference trips. The only problem was the drizzle followed by the heavy rain. I haven't used my pictures yet and I hadn't thought of converting to mono, so I will have a go now. I like the treatment on yours, but agree with Steve that the totally black background is wrong. However, would it be better to darken the foliage a bit in the main image? It is quite complex and does detract a bit from the mules. It's still interesting and good and should do well in comps. |

I think the leaf has good shapes but I think you need to work on it some more. I'd be tempted to darken the background foliage so it stands out even more and then introduce some increased contrast to the leaf. I think it is quite pictorial but unless it has more drama, it won't get anywhere in comps. Try removing the white line on the bottom left side (another leaf?) and I would probably clone out the small leaf at bottom right. It makes the judge look just at the leaf in the middle. |

I immediately wanted to put something in one of the windows ,as Carol has. I was thinking more on the lines of a pale face looking sad, but that may be because I have an image like this with a figure included. I like the apparent darker corners though they are due to the blackened brickwork. Try darkening the right hand side to match the left side. |

I also think the contrast needs to be increased and the corners darkened, otherwise the whole area looks too much the same tones. I don't agree that it needs flipping as we read left to right so it looks correct to me. i would be taking this as well as the small details. I don't know whether these do anything in comps, but in my experience, the details do better than the whole. |

I agree that the dress needs lightening on the folds and I will darken the archway some more. |

Everyone is saying the same -darken the hand and left and brighten the folds of the dress. |

She is actually leaning against an archway -not a tree but our local judge also thought it was arboreal not stone work. I got no award for this image in our People competition, but the standard of the other images was high. |
