Thanks Ian! Yes I obviously need to increase the sky contrast and balance the two sides of the tower a bit more. I have no problem with you fiddling with the image. |

i wasn't sure whether to take out the car or not, but decided in the end that I liked the square format! The cloud still looks OK whether it's square or more vertical. I might have another go with the lens correction tool to see if I can make it better. |

I agree that a title can make a difference. We always have titles at our Society but remember many Internationals don't include them. |

The topaz does seem to have brought out a lot of detail especially the line of the beard. |

That makes the feathers superb but also introduced a white halo round the head and under the neck. |

What is the addition of 2 layers of medium contrast designed to do? I can't see much difference on my monitor between mine and yours. has it darkened the sky a little bit? |

I remember your list of topics and i have used it for suggestions for our club. You are right -it would not be our photo if taken by someone else. however it might be a way of getting people to let one take their photo if they've taken one of you. Most people don't mind if asked but then they are posed in some way. Taking photos of down and outs is not ethical if they are unaware but sometimes I find I've got someone in a photo. The dilemma is whether I give them money afterwards. I usually donate if they are buskers or street performers as they are working for their money. |

I agree that street photography is very difficult. I usually end up with overbright bits and people with things growing out of their heads. As you say it is hard to approach people and ask if they mind and I feel guilty if I don't ask. This year we have a comp in our club with this title and I'm worrying about already. |

I agree with Wes, that the child is the main focus of the image and therefore the mother's face and arm need to be toned down. I found the light on her face was slightly odd as the cheek was very bright and the nose was dark. It also looks as if she has her eyes shut. Do you have another shot where she looks as if her eyes are open? The background almost looks artificial and I suspect it's because you have darkened it but it is still too noticeable. I'm not sure that this one works very well. |

I think you've got the feather detail right on the duck's back and the head and eye detail are good so no problems there. However, the mallard is not doing anything very interesting -just paddling past you. Although it has a reflection, the water has ni ripples or interesting lighting so although the image is technically fine, there isn't much to hold the judge's eye for very long. It actually might be better in colour because mallards have a beautiful iridescent sheen to their feathers. i have done quite a lot of nature in mono as it does bring out detail in fur and feathers but the beasts and birds need to be doing something fairly active or to have great lighting. I'm impressed that you can handhold the new lens. i find I have to use a mono pod or a tripod these days even with the small Olympus lens. |

I wonder whether you could lighten the face a little bit and darken the shirt and the doorway behind him. I love the situation. I know that feeling when it's just impossible to keep one's eyes open any longer and usually the head then drops and you wake up with a start. Is there any more detail to be retrieved in the open window? Did you take it as you were walking past or were you in a vehicle? |

What I find amazing here is the calm expression on his face and that his sunglasses are still in place. The whole picture shows a very active situation and yet he looks perfectly in control. I would have expected a bit more of a grimace under these conditions. He just looks like he's ed his arm round the horns and everything is going exactly as planned! I think your crop has removed enough of the trucks that they aren't too noticeable. I like the dust and dirt too, but I do wonder whether a judge might want a different expression. I assume you have dozens of pictures to choose from. The problem is there are so many of these around and some are so spectacular that they get compared to the detriment of the simply good like yours. |

I think this is quite interesting as the background is blank for a change. I hate the way the right hand man is covering his head and face as if he can't take any more battering and that the left guy has his eyes shut as if he has just been hammered too. Can you tell that I really don't like boxing? However, as a photo it's good simply because it does convey those feelings to me. I agree that the moving arm is good as it gives a dynamic to the image. Can you darken the notices at the base. How much you do depends on whether you want to use it for pj or not. |

Actually the clouds were not the problem. However, there were people wandering along the prom and cars on the road and only a very narrow pavement (sidewalk to you) to stand on. It was a lovely day and not too cold though we had our ski clothes to keep us warm as we were on our way back from cross country skiing in Norway and stopped off to see my cousins. |
