67 Jul 22 Reply Nice. Years ago, we stayed inside the Mara Triangle (west bank of the Mara river). I'm not sure if off-road rules are different
on the east side of the river, and game is so prolific it won't matter. Enjoy.

Your trip sounds amazing. The Maasai Mara has an advantage over the Serengeti national park (where I was) because you'll be able to drive off road to follow the game, or at least could when I was last there years ago. Serengeti rules are/were stricter. With your camp so close to the river you'll surely have amazing opportunities. Do you know which river you'll be located at (Talek, Mara, Sand river or one of Mara's smaller tributaries)? Agreed, the apex predator action is primo, but a migrating mega-herd in panic is a treat -- like a starling murmuration, but with horns and hooves. Eager to hear about the trip when you get back.

67 Jul 22 Reply Thanks Larry, for the considered feedback, very valuable and much appreciated. That hump is indeed distracting, and no eyeballs to offset it. I will continue looking for other pics using the criteria you listed.

Regarding angles and shooting positions, and this is just for some comical context, park rules restrict us to shooting from the jeep, and the jeep has to jockey into position literally racing to the water's edge trying to be the first to get the best position before other jeeps get there. Sometimes we were fortunate to have only a few jeeps but we've counted over 70 jeeps at one crossing.

The driver doesn't really know what location is best because we can't position ourselves on the bank (more park rules) until the wildebeest have crossed midpoint in the river, lest the jeeps frighten them and force their retreat mid-crossing (which we saw happen once). Depending which crossing we're at, the bank might be steep or low when you can shoot almost at eye level. In either case, there's often shore branches/shrubs protruding into the shot that you don't notice until the jeep's stopped because we're approaching the river's edge, bouncing off-road at over 35mph and slamming to a stop. If we correctly predict the animals' exit point on our side of the river, great, but they can also change their mind minutes later and exit at a point that really restricts our shooting options -- like another jeep blocking out shot.

All great fun, and almost as chaotic as the crossing itself.

67 Jul 22 Comment The few white teeth drew my eye quickly and is a point of interest because one rarely sees them like this. I only realized how broken his jaw is when I saw that the tip of the snout actually exceeds the DOF range. The rain drops explain the darkness.

I might have tried experimenting with either a low key version (and let that water and snout tip fade to black) or a version masking the head to lift mids to some head detail, but that's maybe just my eyes don't want to struggle like they used to.

67 Jul 22 Comment How fortunate to have this type of wildlife near your home. Both eyes lit and looking right at you. The low angle is superb.

Too bad he was so close to the reeds, they've got too much detail. Almost worth manually adding some more blur to those reads in the background.

67 Jul 22 Comment I've never been there, so it looks real to me, and as Larry said, amazing. I like the way you revealed those gorgeous hills in the distance.

The only thing to my eye that seems unreal is the green/yellow in the trees and the grass in the foreground which look a bit over saturated.

67 Jul 22 Comment The eagle eye on the gull tells a story. Tough to recuperate subjects at that distance.

My only suggestion is mayby to try and lighten the eagle's belly a bit, but a really great shot regardless.

67 Jul 22 Comment It would be easy to overlook a few birds sitting on the sand, but you did made the subject interesting.

I agree with previous comments, and additionally I would have removed the 2 sticks on the ground in post.
