I prefer your new version with the more subtle colors. |

Might be interesting to see the original for a comparison. |

I also enjoy this. The filter is subtle enough to leave most of what was there, and enhances the feeling. The balance and tones are wonderful. You might consider darkening the brick base just slightly. |

I agree with Mervyn that I want to see more detail in the bottom building. I don't if the slide has any info in the blacks that is not blocked out, but if there was, you could do a lighter scan and blend back some of that.
I am envious of you; you live near one of the best fireworks shows in the country! |

I don't mind the obvious distortion caused by the wide angle lens, as I think the curves add to the dynamics. I would suggest darkening the left building that is just intruding into the frame. Removing it might improve the picture, but then it becomes a lot of work to also have to remove the branches, and I think slightly darker will work just as well. The very top branch on the left has some highlight area next to the frame, and I think painting that dark will eliminate the distraction. Also, there seems to be an optical illusion in the branch that crosses the building, enhanced by the B&W version, where the branch seems to have a gap missing. I think it is just the original light left an area that was very close to the tonal range of the building, and in the B&W version, it just blends, so that the branch is "floating". |

I like your treatment. Having been there in more inferior lighting conditions, I like this as a B&W, for the reasons you stated. Because of the lighting, you have nice details in the falls. My only suggestion would be to vignette the left bottom corner to hold the viewer in. |

I like both versions, but when it comes to tones and textures, I like the mono version better. One thing I noticed is the leaves, especially the left side and top, have a lot of blue in them. I don't know if that is intentional and actually the spectrum that the plant shows. The leaf that bothers me the most is the top left, as the brightness leads me away from the focus point. (Both the top and bottom leaves have lines pointing to the center leaf.) I selected the two side leaves and put more green back in, and also tapered the darkness in the corner so that the eye stays drawn in.I also think that for balance, we should just see a hint of lines in the shadows on the bottom leaf to match the top right. (I did that in my example, but since I did not have a higher res original, doing that was limiting for me.) |
