76 May 24 Comment The timing of the capture of the heron is wonderful. What first got my attention was the golden color going down the bird's long neck and again repeated in the under wing. The position of the bird's wings in takeoff with water dripping from its feet is outstanding. The f-stop (F9) setting was just right as the bird is sharp and the rest of the background is soft so that the viewer's eye rests directly on the bird. Once, I almost did what you were about to do and that was to delete an image that I had taken of a wood duck splashing with bubbles all around it thinking it wasn't sharp (old camera, small viewing area). Turns out when I got home and saw the image on the computer, the image was sharp...lesson learned! May 16th
76 May 24 Comment Nice position of the wings...nice detail in the bird and exposure spot on. Capturing images of birds flying is not always easy as you found out. I try to stick to the larger birds such as egrets for better success as they fly a bit slower than the smaller birds! I'm assuming that the piece of greenery in the bird's beak is nesting material. Just that little bit makes the image as it gives the viewer an idea that the bird is helping his mate build a nest, and thus, tells us a story. May 16th
76 May 24 Comment Jay, such a sense of humor....only 420 years to wait for the next total eclipse. Thank you for sharing this image with us. At least you got the shot and a nice one at that. Unfortunately I didn't have the special lenses to look thru or the film to put over the camera lens to photography the eclipse. My set up was a cereal box where I cut about a 2-3 inch square hole on top, and on opposite side, I punched a hole. When the eclipse occurred I look through the open part of the cereal box and watched the shadow of the eclipse come thru the hole which was then was reflected on the inside of the empty cereal box. Very rudimentary but I got to see the shape of eclipse. May 16th
76 May 24 Comment Great capture/timing of the young boy on a "mission". I agree with Sophie to darken the background as that would make the boy stand out a bit more and the white in the image would be less intense. Myself, I wouldn't clone on the left as you want to give the boy room to march forward but I would probably clone out the hands on the lower left as I feel they are a distraction. The low aperture makes us focus on the young boy and the cloning on the right from the original image was a good decision. If you hadn't cloned on the right I feel the people looking the opposite way would have been a distraction as the focus is on the boy. Hopefully, we'll see more of your images from the trip to Bhutan. May 16th
76 May 24 Comment Well Trey, I'm really impressed with the final image and the steps you took to create this lovely image. Thank you for explaining the steps and your thought process. If I had seen this flower on the trailside, I probably would have passed on and not taken it thinking the background was too busy, the flower was on its side, etc. and not seen the possibilities of making a nice image...lesson learned. I look forward to seeing the images you will take in May at this location. May 16th
76 May 24 Comment I'm impressed that you hand-held and rotated the camera while keeping the center of the rose in place. I've done this but with a collared lens on a tripod. The rotational effect on the rose and leaves is very nice. Nice work, Ian. May 15th
76 May 24 Reply Gordon, Thank you for explaining how to darken the sleeve's edge the correct way..much better than the way I did it. I used the eye dropper tool, selected a color from the sleeve and went over the sleeve's edge, never using the "darken" mode. The color is off a bit in this image as I must have had the incorrect color setting in Photoshop when the image was processed and uploaded. I have since changed it and have uploaded an image (very small) for you to see how the image was originally processed. Since I'm not sure how to downsize an image to include in a "Reply" I had to size the image to 700 px X 487 in order to keep it under 1Mb to upload the image. May 8th
