76 Feb 24 Comment Wow, what a lens, Sophie. For just practicing with a new lens, I'm impressed with how you handled your 180-600 mm lens. I appreciate your explanation of the moth as I've never seen or heard of the Sphynx moth before. Nice capture and the contrast of the colors purple on the lavender and orange on the wing of the month add a nice touch to the overall subjects in the image. Is the lens very heavy? I look forward to seeing what subjects you will be photographing with this lens. Well done Sophie. Feb 27th
76 Feb 24 Comment Beautiful tranquil scene. The contrast in this scene is really nice. What a difference between the original and the final image. Your technical skills in bringing out the shadows really enhanced the layers of the mountain, the lighting on the rock face to the right and the golden reeds to the left. The addition of the swan is a positive one and adds to the overall scene. As to the removal of the small cloud on the right I would leave it in for one reason. The reflection of the small clouds in the reflection is behind a small stalk, and I guess you could remove the cloud and reconstruct the small grass blade in front of it but that would be such a bother. I don't think the small cloud is a distraction and would leave it in the image. Feb 27th
76 Feb 24 Comment You are really a trooper going back in 20 degrees Fahrenheit to photograph the colorful canoes in the snow. Happy that you went back to get a wintertime image of the canoes. Snow always gives a different look to your subject in this snowy landscape. The suggestions from Gordon and Trey are helpful suggestions in making improvements to an already nice image. Well seen and hopefully you had some hot chocolate with schnapps when you got back home! Feb 27th
76 Feb 24 Comment For me, the b/w image is powerful and very strong in this beautiful portrait of the Vietnamese woman. I concur with the others on toning down the neck as the lighting on the woman's face is beautiful. I find the crack in the background distracting and would remove it with the Remove tool or Cloning tool. I like the little things such as the gray hair standing out against the background and the black area that shows thru the earrings. In closing, you captured a great expression on this woman. This is an image to be proud of Sanford...Congratulations. Feb 27th
76 Feb 24 Comment It is important to photograph structures that once served a useful purpose and as a reminder to future generations a glimpse of the past. Encased in this beautiful scene, surround by snow and trees, the structures stand tall and proud. I like the diagonal lines of the trees from the tallest going down to the smaller trees. Complimenting the diagonal of the trees are the diagonal roof lines. The juxtaposition of one building to the other, with one being more hidden by trees than the other, gives importance to the front image. In its simplicity, a beautiful image. Feb 27th
76 Feb 24 Comment Looks like I'm going to have to dust off my old infrared camera and start taking infrared images again. Infrared is appealing on so many levels. I am inspired by you tackling your creative side. Nice elements in this image from good shadows, curving lines (draws your eye into the image) and lighting...looking forward to seeing more of your creative images. Feb 27th
76 Feb 24 Reply Coming from a background shooting landscapes and birds, somewhere along the line, I took a dip in the creative pool of photography. Over a period of a few years, the transition was slow, starting with linear movements taking images (slow shutter speeds), then shooting images with LensBaby lenses and now with intentional camera movement. I almost didn't post this image not knowing how it would be received but happy that I did now as I learn so much from this group and their comments. I still do landscape and bird photography but just have added ICM to the genre of things I do. Thank you Ian for your suggestions and comments...always appreciate your thoughts. Feb 17th
76 Feb 24 Reply Taking the image, my intention was to get some of the table showing at the bottom of the vase but with ICM what you wish for is not what you always get. There is no collar on the 24-105 lens, but with the 70-200 mm lens, there is a collar and sometimes when the camera is on the tripod, I loosen the collar and turn the camera/lens and therefore have more control (well, to a degree). The camera settings, including shutter speed for this image were 1 second @ F9, ISO 100 with the 24-105 lens @ 50mm. As always I like your comments, questions and suggestions on my images. Thank you.
PS: One thing I've learned, from past mistakes, is when moving the camera is not to rush the movement. Some times when I have a subject I like, I will try 1/4, 1/8, down to 1 sec. to see which shutter stop creates the effect that best suits the subject.
