76 Jul 23 Reply Thank you Gordon for your comments and helpful information. As always, I appreciate the information you give me. I actually do go back and rework my images with the input I get from you and other members. I always find that when I challenge myself to do better and go beyond my comfort zone that my post-processing results improve. Jul 29th
76 Jul 23 Reply Thank you Ian for your comments. For so long I was a mediocre post processor as my post processing techniques were just ok. So, this year, I've been watching videos and spending time working on improving my skills. I am forever grateful to the comments from the group as that has been helpful in my progress. I find that when I spend the time working on improving my skills and going beyond my comfort zone and challenging myself to do better, it is only then, that I am at my happiest. B/W photography feeds the heart and soul of emotions, and for that reason, I am drawn to it. Posted: 07/29/2023 15:35:49 Jul 29th
76 Jul 23 Reply Trey, Thank you for your kind thoughts and words. Recently I watched a video on b/w which Cole Thompson pictures himself as an artist and not a photographer. Upon looking at a scene he envisions what the image will look like before even pressing the shutter button. This process is from seeing a scene through post processing. Seeing in this way is changing the way in which I visualize a scene before pressing the shutter button. Jul 29th
76 Jul 23 Comment I was intrigued by the elderly woman's expression in your image so I watched a 5 minute video by the Royal Ballet that featured Carabosse's taunting of Aurora. I was just mesmerized at all the expressions of eyes, mouth, hand gestures, body movements of the person who played Carabosse in the Royal Ballet. Now, looking at the image you captured of the elderly woman, I can see all the same expressions. Your moment of capture showing all these expression was great timing on your part and beautifully done. It takes great skill capturing the "right" moment. Well done Sophie. Jul 16th
76 Jul 23 Comment Gordon, thank you for the history of Wheal Coates tin mine in Cornwall. I appreciate the background on tin mining in this area and your family history as I feel a bit of emotion when I look at this image and think about your attachment to this area. As to the timing (sunset) of this image I think it is perfect..great lighting all over and the texture on the foreground and engine house is just right. The lighting and tones is the sky are soft and beautiful. Well done. Jul 16th
76 Jul 23 Comment You took up quite a challenge to process and image with bright light areas and dark shadows. I commend you for taking this image even as a challenge to see how far you can take this image in post processing. It is only when we take images like this that you grow in your skills as a post-processor. I agree with Gordon that the light area is a bit gray at the top. However, I think that you were up to the task of dealing with the lighting conditions successfully and you did a nice job on the emphasizing the roots...nicely done, Jay. Jul 16th
76 Jul 23 Comment Nice expression on the woman's face. With the lighting conditions and time of day you took this image I think your processed image looks really nice. Hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of seeing what I could do with your image because I have difficulty at times post-processing images under these types of conditions. My goal was to diminish the background by taking the highlighting slider all way down, lower the texture down to soften the background a bit and up the texture slider to the right to give a hint of sharpness. I also went into layers in LRC, watching my histogram at all times, worked on lighting up the face. Finally I went into PS using curves with the intent of lightening up the eyes. Using curves the whole face was lightened, then I created a mask to hide the lighter face and went in with a brush and painted in the effect on only the eyes and the reduced the opacity. I'm not sure my interpretation of your image was an improvement on what you had already done. Congratulation on your image Sanford...a very nice portrait. Attached is a copy of the image I worked on.

76 Jul 23 Comment The texture on the flower and wood piece really add to the focus (sharpness) on where it should be. The soft background adds a nice backdrop to the wood and flower. It is a matter of personal choice but, if this was my image, I probably would have gotten rid of the larger dark spot in the upper right in the soft background. However, I was happy to see that you maintained a nice tone in the shadow on the leaf below the flower. You have maintained good control over the light and dark areas in the image...tones are good. You have good separation between the edge of the wood piece and the background. Paying attention to all these details is important and it appears you gave thought to all these different nuances. Well done Trey. Jul 16th
76 Jul 23 Reply The lens I used for this image was never the sharpest lens but I have read that, for maximum sharpness, to shoot at either F11 or F8. Next time I photograph a landscape I will take an image at F8, F11 and F16 (with one of my better lenses) and do a comparison test. Thanks for your input Sanford. Jul 10th
