Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
63 Jun 21 Comment The elephant in the room has been addressed.

I would like to see the lower left leaf be a bit brighter, as a counterbalance to the blossom. Or (further) darken the area between the blossom and leaf?

The color here is beautifully handled. Well done.

63 Jun 21 Comment Excellent detail and color. The red is very rich and deep.

I would suggest working the scene for a composition that provides more context. Then use vignetting to darken everything around the bud (i.e. a radial filter in ACR would do the trick). You could also (in ACR) lower the luminance of the green in the image (and maybe yellow?), and raise the luminance of red (and magenta?). This would brighten the bud and darken the leaves/stems, which might help it pop... or maybe not.

I do enjoy the placement of the leaves around the bud.

63 Jun 21 Comment Beautiful color, and pleasing composition. Appreciate your choice to isolate the flowers from the original background, but I'm not a fan of the stark black because of the disassociation. Here is where some PP work using textures might prove useful (just a suggestion), but it's possible the original would just not work at all; I'm just throwing out an idea.

The lighting is very nice, as is the detail; we love a cloudy day. Have you considered cropping the bottom as well? The fact that the top and sides intersect petals, but the bottom doesn't, seems a bit off to me, especially since there's nothing there to support the blossoms.

63 Jun 21 Comment For me, the DoF is excellent. Selective focus should direct our attention to the subject, and that's what it does here. Sharp images front to back require other techniques to direct the eye, and none of them should elevate emphasis on those bracelets. Love the rings, the fingernails, the icues. The appropriate use of B&W brings focus on texture and shape; the color image isn't nearly as interesting to my eye. I might suggest a slight vignette to help detract from the bracelets.

Congratulations on your selection as finalist.

63 Jun 21 Comment Another perfectly executed focus stack of an insect swimming in blackness. Technically well done. The broad lighting, while not harsh, comes across as sterile to my eye. Perhaps some short lighting to create some drama might be worthwhile to explore? Jun 24th
63 Jun 21 Comment Nice! Butterflies are a tricky subject (at least for me) so well done. Super pose and placement.

Color good, and plenty of detail. The plane of focus appears to have landed on the abdomen, but it's rather hard to be certain with these low resolution images. The head just seems a bit soft to me.

I'd like to see more space on the left and bottom, to move it out of the center, allow the composition to breathe a bit, and provide some stem for the flower.

63 Jun 21 Reply My intent was to emphasize one thing for the eye to land on, since the colors fill the frame, and the shapes are all similar. Which is what I like about the image (not so much the focus).

I will have to go back and spend more time to explore this (once the lockdown is over).

63 Jun 21 Reply I believe that these are typical river rocks used in landscaping (albeit colorful ones), and I use a procedure to bring out (maybe create?) those colors. I recall being attracted to the colors, and wanted to really push that aspect of the image. Jun 24th
63 Jun 21 Reply Thanks!

I was pretty close to them, and probably at f/8-ish (where that lens is pretty sharp). I should get better at making notes of settings when using manual lenses...

What you see here is DoF blur. I rather like that scale is indeterminate. :-)

The Velvet creates a different sort of effect when open wide, that really isn't blur. More "glow" or soft focus. An since that isn't evident (to me) in this image, I can guess that the aperture was somewhat tight.
