now that everyone has weighed in I must confess that Steve is right and these are candy sprinkles, the kind you would put on an ice cream cone. They are shot at 2X magnification with a special new macro lens that I bought which goes beyond 1 to 1 macro.
About 30 images are focus stacked and processed in helicon focus. This lens doesn't focus at all so I had to move it forward and back in very tiny increments on a focusing rail. Lighting is with a ring flash which I manually held off to one side and the surface is a stone cutting board. Fun! |

I like the black and white. I like the layering of the elements. If you dare to go nuts in Photoshop, there is the possibility of removing the tree using cloning techniques. |

Dale,
I completely agree with your processing. I think some people (like me) would be tempted to crank up the contrast and make the clouds look more crunchy than they really are. Your take gives the right move.
I might crop off some of the right side. Also, if there was a way do do this without drowning (people always make unreasonable suggestions like this) perhaps you could move closer to the bridge so that it rises up out of the lower left corner of your image. |

Here's what's good about this photo.
1. the angle, looking slightly up at the eagle makes it look majestic but not like you shot it up in a tree
2. the expression, as Chan says, goes with our perception of this raptor as king of its domain
3. super sharp face.
Love it. |
