Hi Jeri, welcome back. I hope your cruise was very enjoyable.
For me, the sense of awe occurred when I saw the bird. I think the bird is the key to the image.

Hi Kirsti, I really like the contrast between the cold white lights of the harbor and warm lights of the residential area - good observation on your part. I think it helped to remove the yellow and blue colors from the harbor, they detract from the cold effect that you wanted to document. I also think that the panorama format is very beneficial. I think the starbursts might make the photograph appear a bit blurred. Would it help to use f11 ? Good job. Regards Billy |

Hi Jeri, I prefer the color version because it provides more detail in the foreground which contrasts well with the dog and the dust from the action. At first, I saw the white parts of the dog and then my eye moved to the foreground before exploring the dust and discovering the bird. I almost gasped when I saw the bird and realized that the dog had actually caught a bird. My next reaction was that I was very impressed by your skill in capturing this split second in time. For me, the action is best portrayed by the realization that the dog was fast enough to catch a bird, and I was glad that I had the opportunity to view the photograph at my leisure and finally arrive at the bird. The judges may have only a few seconds to view each image, so there is a possibility that they may not actually see the bird. I think the challenge is to find a way to make the bird the first thing that the judges see. Would it help to darken most of the image and brighten the dog's head and the bird? What do you think? Good luck in the contest. Billy |

Hi Rick, I would never have imagined that this is a composite of five photographs. You have been very skillful in blending them together. The sky and the moon make it look surreal. Great image. Regards Billy |

Hi Linda, I like all the textures in this image. We have the glass-like water in the middle of the creek with the sharp reflections of the trees. Then we have the dimpled texture of the ice on each side of the creek and the course texture of the bark. Good job. Billy |

Hi Joan, your image is a wonderful demonstration of the benefit of photographing during the golden hour. The warm light creates a striking effect on the snow fields and has a major impact. Regards Billy |

Hi Bruce, I think the photograph is helped by the colonial clothing. Williamsburg has many interesting characters. Kirsti's conversion to black and white makes it look very authentic. Thank you for your comments. Regards Billy |
