For many years I have participated in a weekly photo challenge on 52Frames.com. A free world wide activity that gives a challenge every week and provides information, YouTube links, and small sub-groups to help members complete the challenge as well as they can. Each week a volunteer picks the 52 photos they liked best for the week. People use all kinds of cameras including cell phones. Some recent members are very likely pro's, trying to widen their skills. Others, like me, were rank beginners and have gone on to probably an advanced intermediate level.
The assignments have included "tapestry, nature, single point of focus, high contrast, complementary colors, high key, low key, etc". This week the challenge was shoot at 100 iso, in manual. Anything you want.
When I took the flower photo initially, I took it in Auto to see what the camera would do. The photo was washed out and flat. Probably 5.6, 1/320, 100 iso. I put the ND filter on just to see what would happen and if the bright highlights would come down. Then I used Manual and just played with the aperture and shutter dials until the meter looked ok and the histogram was ok. Camera was on AF-S, with matrix metering. |

It was bright and there were a lot of shadows from other vegetation and this was about the only spot I could stand where I could try to keep the bright house out of the photo.
Thanks. |

I like how the stems frame his head, and his little feet twist around the stem. The background contrast is very bright, maybe a little vignette around the edge would keep the focus on the bird. Nice catch. |

I agree with Peter's comments about the level of the camera for this shot, which was probably a hard shot to get anyway. The Dragon fly catch is so cool. I find the bright green in the upper left area to be distracting, I would try lowering the highlights in that area, or darkening the green. |

This makes me want to come to Arkansas, where I have never been. I like the angle you shot this with, instead of profile. I would like to see it a bit sharper in the middle. This would be a good flower to try a photo stacking technique to see how much you could get in focus. Disclaimer: I have never done it myself, but am going to try and learn soon! |

These fast gulls are so hard to get. The wingspread has a nice reflection of light along the edge. Those black eyes are always difficult, somehow I would like to see them closer, or with some glint. |

I like the reflection in the eye of the Cardinal. I can't make it bigger but was wondering if you taking the photo is part of the reflection. The complementary colors are wonderful here with the red and green that that little green caterpillar. Its a super photo. |

The eye on you makes this photo. I like how the light reflects off the white feathers, and I also like the faint streams of clouds in the sky. |
