49 Jan 23 Comment Thanks for your wonderful feedback. Here is an attempt to fix up the image based on your comments. What do you think? Jan 17th
49 Jan 23 Reply Good suggestions. I was also concerned about the halos. Jan 10th
49 Jan 23 Comment Not sure that multiple speed lights will help. The real issue is that you have to be mobil so having an off camera flash won't work unless you want to call people over to a sort of studio set up, but then you woukd lose the candid shot like you got! Jan 9th
49 Jan 23 Comment Alan,
What a great moment to capture! Mom and child are having a great time and their expressions show it!! Your post processing skills are admirable! Love how you darkened and blurred the other dancers, so that we focus our attention on this one mom and her child!

I'm not very good at taking these indoor people shots, so I have some trepidation about advising you, but goes. The effect of the flash mounted on your camera provides awfully harsh lighting on the subjects. You've already mentioned a couple of possible work arounds, like trying to bounce the flash off the ceiling. Sounds like you tried that. Another possibility is to use a Gary Fong diffuser. This is kind of shaped like a globe and fits on the end of your speedlight. I've used this with modest success. My only other thought is to keep moving around so you can isolate a pari of dancers.

49 Jan 23 Comment Josh,
There is so much to like about the way you have composed this image! If you not told me that it was smoke, I would have said that this was early morning as the mist was just barely lifting. You have a separate tree not cut off by the frame on the far left that serves as a great anchor. You have the trees that are presumably closer a little darker and clearer (on the left), than those towards the middle and right. This gives depth to the image! Great job!

About the only suggestion that I might offer is to crop a little off the top and bottom, but I am only talking about say 5%.

49 Jan 23 Comment Craig,
I admire your PS skills. No matter how many PS classes I take, I still feel like I'm a novice! The pink flowers make a wonderful subject. I love how the different part seem to be dancing together! Fun!

I'd suggest that if you were going to go with a texture, then I would blur out all of the vegetation around the central flower and let the texture dominate. All of the bright greens in the background are distracting my eye from your subject.

67 Jan 23 Reply Yah, it was in the small county park behind my house on one of those very cold days just before Christmas! Jan 10th
67 Jan 23 Comment All, I think this one is more obviously ice. I took it on the same day as the other image, but at a different location. Jan 9th
67 Jan 23 Reply Cindy, Oh my the repost is a cut above the original! Nice job!! Jan 9th
67 Jan 23 Comment Bud,
What a great capture! Love the way you have cropped it, leaving space on the left for the bird to look into. The background is beautifully blurred to focus our attention on bird! Well done. I also like that you happened to get the bird on a branch of a bush that has those threatening thorns. That adds interest for me anyway!

My only suggestion is to try to add a tiny bit of catchlight in the eye of the bird. Since the bird has a black band of feathers going across the eye and the eye is probably black, I cannot see the eye. Perhaps us a brush in LRC to subtely bring up the exposure on the eye.

67 Jan 23 Comment Richard,
You're right. Sunflowers in bloom are hard to resist! I love the black background. It really helps the flowers pop!

The hard part about flower photography in the field is trying to figure out where to cut it off. You have some flowers on the right that are clipped. Perhaps crop off the group on the right so as to focus the viewer's attention on the grouping of 4 in the middle? I also like the suggestion by others to crop down from the top. The black background is great but you don't tneed that much of it.

67 Jan 23 Comment Larry,
Your patience was certainly rewarded! Love the explanations you provide us each month with your submissions. Very informative about photography and nature! Thanks. The diagonal line of bird's wings adds drama to this shot. Great work. Like others I have tried not very successfully to capture BIF. It's challenging!

Yah, you're right that clipping the wings and tails usually gets you bounced from a camera club competition. Since your goal was to show us the capture and consumption of the insect by the bird, you might consider cropping it even more to focus our attention on that critical part of your story. I did not think that you had blown out the white on the bird's shoulder.

67 Jan 23 Comment Cindy,
This is great!! You managed to get this burglary at just the right moment! Amazingly the bodies of the two birds did not merge on you, which is also terrific!! The crop is appropriate and just right!

About the only suggestion I would venture is to check the white slider in LRC. The egret's color is very close to being blown out.

67 Jan 23 Comment Michael,
I love this little bird. Never seen this species and I love that little orange patch on top of his head. Great DOF, blurring the background nicely. The crop also is great! I'm surprised that you did not have more of a noise problem shooting at ISO 7200, but I did not see much.

My suggestions for improvement would be to darken the areas above and below the bird to draw my attention to the bird. You might try using LRC's radial tool. The branch cutting across in front of the bird presents a real challenge! Ideally it shouldn't be there, since it cuts the bird in half, but practically speaking getting any kind of shot of this little guy was probably tough!

67 Jan 23 Reply Thanks, Cindy. I think the lesson I have learned from all of the commenters is that this doesn't look like icde. I have other images where that is clearer. Thanks again to all of you!! Jan 9th
67 Jan 23 Reply Richard you are exactly right. An eggshell thin layer of ice forms above a puddle of water and an air bubble is under it which is why it is so white. The ice also forms unevenly which is why you can see streeks in the ice. They can form wonderful leading lines. The low angle of the light shows these lines. I guess I coukd crop it down to eliminate the leaf and go with more of an abstract. Jan 7th
67 Jan 23 Reply Bud, thanks for your comments. Interesting that both you and Larry did not see this as ice without the help of my write up. Not sure if that is good or bad? Jan 4th
67 Jan 23 Comment Larry,
Thanks for your feedback. Interesting that it did not appear to be ice. Hmmm.
