49 Jun 22 Comment Dicky,
Looks like you went to an exciting race! I agree with the others that you either needed to get more of the boat or a lot less. Given the shot you have provided, I might suggest that you crop the bottom just above the head of the blond lady in front, so we don't see her. Then the eye goes straight to the woman raising both hands as if they just won. That seems to be the story here.

Like you I have tried to take pictures in an ice rink. The lighting is tough, since it is usually tungsten. You did a great job in taking care of that part of the problem. I think I would have shot it at a more narrow DOF, like f8. Her face is slightly out of focus and her back skate is definitely not sharp. You might also go with say 1000 sec. to freeze the motion.

All that said, this is a great shot that should make her parents smile!!

Like the otehre commenters, I thought this image was terrific! The pre-dawn subdued hues are very beautiful! We are so used to seeing oranges in images from Utah, so this is quite arresting in a good way.

About all I might suggest is giving a try at cropping a bit off the right side, so that that small pinnacle on the right side is the first thing you see on the right. Just try looking at it that way and see what you think.

The portrait of your granddaughter is precious! I see a look of curiosity. I love that you have her mom out of focus. The only thing I would suggest would be to clone out that bright light in the upper right.

Love the creative imagination you brought to this image. How well I remember some of those westerns that tried to simulate nighttime by shooting in broad daylight with a filter. Today of course those efforts look amateurish to us.

I think this would work better if the sky were an inky black. Its tonality is too similar to the tonality of the rocks. Perhaps another way to go is to have the rocks in color with a deep black night sky?

Thanks, I should have done one more histogram check before I exported the image for the group.

49 Jun 22 Comment Craig,
Well I sure got my money's worth. Thanks so much for your detailed and insightful commentary.

You're right about the couch! It was dreadful. That is why I made the back of the couch as dark as possible. Good point about the crease in the drape!

I shot this with a 24-70mm lens, probably closer to 70mm.

I was not crazy about where the light source was set up. I think this was a harsh light just over my right shoulder. It created a shine on her skin that I had to tone down with lowering the clarity. I like lighting for a model to be upper right, as you suggested.

Thanks again!

Excellent shot of this eagle! Very sharp. The eye is dead on great! I have no objection to sky replacement, which you appear to have done quite skillfully. I agree with the others that a blue sky with some puffy white clouds wld have been a better choice. Like you I dream of an 800mm lens, but haven't even rented one.

What a great moment! You got the parent bird feeding the baby! As others have mentioned, the noise issue was probably your biggest hurdle. The edited version is till a little noisy. And and Larry mentioned it introduced an over sharpness issue. Love to join you at your outdoor studio!!

67 Jun 22 Comment Larry,
I always enjoy your telling how you got the shot as much as the shot itself. Not sure I want to get on my belly anywhere in FL, so good for you. This is a very impactful moment. The light is dramatic. About all I might suggests is to subtly lighten up the back of he bird's feathers. They are merging with the dark background.

67 Jun 22 Comment Jason,
Kudos for capturing this moment. You have great separation between the two birds and the two legs also are separated. Excellent! You have momma or daddy bird in a protective position over junior! And you have junior with a morsel in his/her mouth! Excellent. I'm not bothered by the downward slant to the right.

Have you thought about cloning out the identification bands on the bid bird's legs?

67 Jun 22 Comment Frank,
Like the others, I was incredibly impressed with this image. The positioning of the birds to one another is very dramatic. The upper bird seems to want to put its wing around the lower bird. The red eyes are great too! It's hard to capture the feather detail with som much of the image having been cropped. Perhaps run it through Topaz Sharpen AI?

67 Jun 22 Comment Michael,
I agree with Larry and Isaac's comments. A bit more sharpening on the wings of the fly and turn it 90 degrees to give us a better idea that it is a fly. At first I was bothered by the yellow anther on the left side of your original image. It cuts across the wing of the fly and it is very bright. It drew my eye away from the fly. I suppose you could consider cloning it out. See what you think.
