Stanley, Thank you for the story behind this image. It is a visually stunning scene. The mountains themselves are dramatic, but the flow of terrace lines create varying undulating shapes - each with reflected warm light (in this case) from the setting sun. WOW!
I thing an interesting image could also be made of just the terraced fields. That would be an interesting study in lines, shapes and coloration. |

Karen, this has been very interesting discussion around this image. I see what everyone is saying about artistic expression ( the silhouette) and the telling a story aspect .
I've been persuaded that the non-silhouetted version is better in this situation.
Thanks again for your input. |

Thank for your comments, Martin.
This certainly has been an interesting discussion about my submitted image.
I do agree that the primary difference between my (submitted) silhouette and the original is the difference between "artistic expression" and "telling the story". |

Martin, I always smile whenever I see one of your portrait images for the first time. Your ability to capture the essence of the people you photograph, is admirable - whether they work for you or someone off the street. This one of Ian is grittier than most. The cigarette is a small but powerful aspect of Ian's portrait - and his character - especially since he "rolls his own".
The post-production darkening of the background is very well done. |

Karen,
So glad to see that you make the trek up to the south shore of Lake Superior for a workshop. It is quite a GREAT Lake!
I love everything about this image - except for a flat, unexciting sky.
I took the liberty of perking it up a bit with a replaced sky befitting the late time of day. It won't be allowed into an official competition in the Nature category, but I think it's more wall-worthy with a more interesting sky.

Shirley,
Well done.
I love being able to play around with images like this - just because you now have so many tools to be creative with.
I love the off-centered tower leading to the offset cables. The coloration you added just makes it look like you just had fun playing with this. |

Well, it looks as though we both submitted images this month that has a silhouetted person at sunset.
I love the sky and the dramatic clouds just minutes before the sun sets for the day. It looks as though you captured the last gasp of good sunlight before the sun goes behind the clouds on the horizon. Good timing.
Overall, my preference for a silhouetted subject would be a larger version of the fisherman. It takes a second look around the foreground to be able to see the fisherman. But I understand your limitation with the choice of a wide-angle lens and the restrictions on your movement.
Love the effort, though!
Very nice image.

Thanks, Shirley.
One of my sons used his cell phone to capture a nice round floating bubble with the sun directly behind it. He had to move around to be able to capture it in that position, but it was a very nice image. See attached.
My submitted image was one of a sequence of multiple shots I took while my grandson was blowing this bubble. As I was initially looking through the sequence in LR, I saw the progression of the bubble and was pleasantly surprised when I got to this one. Until that point, I wasn't sure I had gotten the sun behind the bubble. (Whew!) |

Hi Piers. Thanks for your comments. I went back and looked at subsequent images for the one submitted and found one that was more evenly balanced due to the absence of the bright orange sun. What a difference in exposure! See attached.
I still like the silhouette but see what Karen was referring to and made modifications in the original to brighten my grandson's torso. See my response to her comment. |

Karen, Thanks for your comments.
I see what you are referring to with the absence of his arm holding on to one of the sticks. I'll play around with it and see what I can do to show some definition to his arm. How's this?? |

Carol,
Before I read your description, I knew where this image was taken. Congrats on winning the competition at NBG. I know I'll be seeing it again (a few times) in the upcoming months.
Very nice use of masks on both the lily and the background. it's a WOW image! |
