Very Interesting capture, Martin. I might not have noticed it myself had Shirley not referenced the 1/3, 1/3 aspect of this image. That, and the stopped-flailing hair really makes this image stand out.
You do appear to have interesting morning walks. |

Tor,
Outstanding image!!! Love the high Key style. Love the texture of the dead wood as well as the feathers.
I have been photographing birds as of late and one thing I've learned is that the eyes are the most important part of the image. So, in editing, I've been creating a brush mask on each eye and "paint" in lightening to enhance its importance.
Give it a try and see how you like it. |

Hi Karen,
At initial viewing of this image, I thought that the beautiful butterfly was resting/static on the red flowers it appears to be just above. Further viewing revealed only 2 sharp aspects of the image with the rest in nice degrees of blur. So, to my eye, there is a visual conflict relating to the perspective.
Piers has an interesting suggestion, but it is technically complicated.
Otherwise, I love the fact that you captured the butterfly with motionless wings. |

Shirley.
Wonderful image. Great touch with the editing sliders to bring out the details in the colors and the feathers.
I agree with others that a bit less crop from the bottom would improve the breadth of the reflection - a critical portion of the composition. I would like to see the reflection include all of the rock to the left the Heron to help add to the story of the setting.
Very nice. |

Piers, You are a man after my own photographic-vision heart. I would have taken this image if I came across it.
I love this image as presented. I can appreciate it even more once reading the story behind the capture and editing. I love the Monochrome treatment. I can tell you had fun playing with this editing.
Very well done!! |

Piers,
I love the phrase "Impactful Image" and so glad that you like the concept. I took your advice to crop away some of the unncessary content and realized that I wasn't seeing the image with fresh eyes. I agree with your suggestion. I'm attaching the new version. It also includes Shirley's suggestion re: the darkness of the lower right corner. I brought up the shadows a bit. |

Thanks for your wonderful comments, Shirley.
For reference, I did bring up the shadows in that lower right corner - it was darker than it is now. It now shows a bit of detail that wasn't visible originally. I stopped where I did with the slider to avoid it being too obvious.
After reading Piers comments (below) I did his suggested crop as well as lighten up that lower right corner again. I reposted the cropped image. Better? |
