2 Apr 24 Comment Tor,
There's a lot that I like about this image, since it's very much like one that I might take, but... after the initial viewing, I had to stop and ask myself... "what am I supposed to be looking at"?
I like the angles, the lines, the shadows and contrasts, even the soaring bird, but couldn't define a specific eye-drawing item.
Like others have previously noted, a B/W conversion might add to the angular/abstract mystique of the image, so I took the liberty to do a quick and dirty modification to the B/W, move some sliders, crop in a bit from the left to make the major shadows more equal on each side, and make the sky white-ish. The white sky really accents the bird. Here's my version.

Wonderful capture. This is an image I never conceived could exist. Great crop from the original to capture the essence of the story. I like how the reflection creates an "X". Good timing to catch the light touch the bat has with the water surface.
Jealous!

2 Apr 24 Comment Terri, I like the concept of this setting, but there is a lot that bothers me about this image.
My very first impression upon seeing this image is that the lady is crooked or slanted. Her head and torso appear to be lower than her legs. Further examination reveals it to be an illusion due to the couch being at an angle.
I'm not an expert at Portrait photography, but both hands, to me, are bothersome - the right hand is limp and lifeless while the left hand disappears behind the top of the couch and is nonexistent. Perhaps if she were holding something - like a stemmed rose - there could be more of a story.
My apologies for the negativity. The other images you've submitted in previous months have been outstanding, and I'm looking forward to seeing more like them.

There's a lot that I like about this image, but as presented, There's way too much sky and water dead space. My immediate thought was to crop out most of the sky and water to create a stunning panorama. I took the liberty of performing a top and bottom crop without coming in from either side. Adding the side crop could eliminate much of the repetition of buildings.
So, I did that, too, as well as increasing saturation. That's the image I attached.
Either one would be awesome on your living room wall - large scale!! Very cool image.

2 Apr 24 Comment Piers,
I like this style and have personally done the same high key effect on both a Gentoo Penguin in Anarctica - pretty easy to do with a snowy background - and, more recently, with a Wood Stork on an upper limb of a dead tree at the Alligator Farm in St Augustine, FL. (attached)
Your gull in flight is very well processed. It appears as though the gull is coasting in for a landing, so no problems with motion blur in the wing tips. Plus, you had plenty of shutter speed to freeze motion, too. I like the contrasting shades of gray. Also, the bird appears to be looking directly at you, so that's a bonus.
Well done!
