A beautiful photo; the animal and the setting are both very impactful. I appreciate the contrast between the animal and its surroundings.
It appears to my eyes that the rule of thirds was applied precisely here; but like Sarita, I'd be curious to see the picture copped a bit on the right side.
Very impressive picture!!! |

Christine: What a striking bird and beautiful shot!
In my opinion, it was a good call to choose f/11. The branches are part of the environment in this photo and since they play such a prominent role, it's great that they are all in focus.
I agree with Sarita's observations about cropping, and it seems to me that the photo would have been even better if we could have seen the entirety of the eagle's tail. |

Judy: I love the texture and detail in this shot. The feathers, eye, and beak are all tack sharp and very impactful to me as the viewer.
I'm curious about the composition and cropping (if there was any cropping). The only way I can think of that this photo could be improved is if there was a bit more space at the bottom of the photo, so that there was a little more room under the beak.
Other than that - at least in my opinion - this is a near-perfect shot! |

My eye is drawn immediately to the color of the bird and the crispness of the shot. I'm guessing that this is an Anna's hummingbird?
The Riparian Preserve is a wonderful place to shoot, but it can be challenging to get backgrounds that are entirely clean.
Congrats on finding and capturing a beautiful bird!

Sarita: This is a behavior I'm not sure I've ever seen in squirrels (with twig in their mouth) so that alone makes it a fantastic capture! This photo has impact and a great story.
Did you literally take the photo through a closed window?!
Was this handheld? 1/500s is right on the edge of what I'd attempt with a 500mm lens; although my hand-holding is far from the steadiest.
Looks as though like it was a challenging day for light; the focus around the head and the eyes seems a little soft to my eyes. |

The colors are my favorite part of this photo; the orange Ladybug contrasted with the blue flowers and the green background gets you attention and gives the photo a natural focal point.
As much as we both love birds, I understand that it's nice once in a while to photograph something different!
Just curious; if you had been shooting an f/4 or f/2.8 lens instead of the 5.6. would you have used the lower f-stop? |
