Thanks David, nice catch on the haloing. It's a result of upsizing in Topaz Gigapixel because the image was taken of birds that were about 500 yards away. I had to enlarge, process and then crop - so that's what happened. Oh well, nothing is perfect these days... |

Hi Susan, the gull is closer by a bit to the camera than the eagle, the difference in perspective accounting for the apparent size disparity. The eagle is bigger than the gull. The eagle's wing position also misleads on size.
The Z800mm is much lighter than the non-Z 800mm lens. I have shot with both. I shot some images with the Z800 this week handheld, that came out very nice at 1/5000 sec and f/9. That said. I had it mounted on a RRS TVC-34L tripod with a Wimberley gimbal for most of the day, which is way easier. |

When you're right, you're right. ;-)
The eagle did not catch the gull. |

I have never heard of these birds, and I can see how difficult it is to photograph them under the conditions you described. The D500 with the 300mm PF is a great rig to achieve it.
I looked up your bird and found it is a male Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus). You see a lot of them back East, and they are strangers to us Westerners. |

Your tale reminds me of some of my own ill-advised adventures with a camera and tripod. I'm glad yours did not result in a broken leg or car-jacking. I followed along with you, captivated by what must have been your frustrations trying to get to a good location while losing a sinking image. To best view your image, I turned my screen to dark view and turned off all my lights. That's when it really came through. Enjoyed your tale and the scope of the photo. Looking at the galaxy and all those stars is mesmerizing. Thank you. |

A great image of a Snowy. They are so fun to shoot when you can catch them in light like this. Great job. I'm glad you didn't erase the falling pin feathers from the preening as noise. They are the finishing touch. Beautiful. |

Hi Michael, I love your composition. You collected all the features just right. This works really well in B&W, but I also like the colors in your original. The deep blue sky offset by lightening the colors in the sandstone would also make a terrific image. The Bisti Badlands are new to me. Thanks for the introduction. |
