Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
67 Jan 23 Comment I agree with what you said for the most part, Larry. For the record, I do not, as a general rule, use presets (with the caveat here that, in this case, I did use Nikon's factory settings which did change the pure raw image).

I advocate for each individual to process a photo the way he or she sees it best. It is, after all, a piece of art.

I am puzzled by the group's reaction to this photo because when I enlarge it on this website, the feathers, beak, and claws within the f/5.6 depth of field are all tack sharp on my monitor. I slightly lightened the eye to bring up the pupil and the iris, careful not to overdo it.

I would have loved the conference you attended to hear all the latest tech input. I'm sure photo contest judges are being driven mad by the expanding technology and what comprises true photographic excellence.

I'm just an old dude enjoying myself and appreciating the advanced education I'm receiving here.

67 Jan 23 Reply I lived there at the time and it was the only place I could find sunflowers to shoot! 🤣 Jan 11th
67 Jan 23 Comment I have never seen an in-flight robbery attempt from another species by an Egret. I have seen them steal from one another. This is extraordinary! Great capture. Don't you LOVE the Z9! Jan 9th
67 Jan 23 Reply Richard - You won't find these in the PNW. I shot this in Kenya. 😉 Jan 9th
67 Jan 23 Comment Cindy: You are right! This is a Grey-backed Fiscal. The book I had as a guide did not include these birds, so I took a "best guess." I'm glad to have a real birder to help me out.
I left room on the left so the bird would have somewhere to look in his gaze. Your comments on contrast are appreciated.

67 Jan 23 Comment Hi Michael: I love this bird! I don't get to see any of these in the Pacific Northwest. The branches are a little distracting, but they are real for the environment and sharp (no pun intended). The background is a bit noisy. Jan 7th
67 Jan 23 Comment Hi Michael: I guess that's just the difference in the screens. Mine looks pretty sharp. Jan 7th
67 Jan 23 Comment Hi David: I like the story you got from this photo too. I had to study it and then read your write-up to interpret what I was seeing. The ice is strange with its sparkles and contours on a macro view level. At first, I thought it might be a white trash bag but as I drew closer it looked almost alien. That's the secret to good art. Draw your audience in and make them think. Cheers! Jan 4th
67 Jan 23 Comment Richard: Great photo. Grabbed me right away. You planned your composition and lighting beautifully and got a great result. Now I have to go back to some of my photos of Hawaiian sunflowers fields to see if any can measure up. Jan 4th
67 Jan 23 Comment Larry: Having spent many hundreds (thousands ?) hours trying to photograph BIFs, I appreciate the labor of love it took to create this image. Your advice to view it enlarged is excellent. The talons and the beak are extraordinary, and the wing diagonal of the crop is really nice. If judges don't like it, too bad. You got what you worked for. This one belongs on a wall, if not in a contest. Jan 4th
67 Jan 23 Comment Hi Isaac: This was a recent discovery because I also had noise problems in my photos that should not have been there. I got noise even with fast lenses in moderate lighting. As described above, I got desperate enough to return to the beginning.
I downloaded Nikon Transfer 2 and Nikon NX software to my desktop. I then took the original (unerased) CFe cards from my Africa trip that I'd previously downloaded directly to LRC. I imported these original cards to Nikon NX using all Nikon software factory settings. From there, I imported the photos to a separate folder in LRC.
When I opened those photos with no adjustments and compared them with those imported directly into LRC, I was immediately impressed. Especially with bird shots where the feathers stood out so sharply and the backgrounds where very little noise was present.
Although slower, I now have a new workflow that will save much post-processing time.
