Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
12 May 25 Reply Thank you for mentioning other photo ideas that could be made with the same items. In addition to critiques of the current image, it is inspirational to talk about other photos that could be made using the inspiration of the current photo. In other words, not simply improvement ideas but also other photo ideas using the same elements. May 26th
12 May 25 Comment After reading all the comments and looking at the image again, I still "read" the same story as when I looked at it the first time. The bright outdoors draws my eye and sets the scene for the story told by the chess set: The weather is too cold and dreary to be outdoors, so let's play chess indoors. Normally, I'd say the background is too bright. But in the instance it sets the scene for the point of the picture. If the picture were meant to be a portrait of a chess set, then the background would be too bright and busy for me. But I understand the usual reaction of the outdoors being too bright.
And now I understand why the cord is there and how it allows the uncentered-ness of the chess set to be acceptable.

12 May 25 Reply I thought about cloning away the couch cushion but thought no one would notice it because it was so dark! Oops! Glad you liked the hot pink. It was fun to work with. This assignment showed me how many composition possibilities there are for yarn and a hook! I could spend all day doing my 2 favorite hobbies, photography and crocheting! May 21st
12 May 25 Reply I appreciate your well thought out comments. I'm happy that you, too, knew what crocheting looks like. I was sitting crocheting and thinking about what I could photograph for my still life assignment, and then i realized I had one in my lap! I didn't know if it would really qualify as a still life. Glad that everyone did! I simply took the photo when I thought of the idea...and that was the condition of the purse at that moment! A work in progress! I could see a variety of compositions and chose what I did because I thought viewers would "need" to see the word "yarn" in order to understand the image. How wrong I was! Glad it brought back memories of your grandma's crocheting. May 21st
12 May 25 Reply Thanks for recognizing the crochet theme even without yarn! I had so purposely placed the word "yarn" in hopes that people would be able to make sense of my setup. I was just as surprised as pleased that the hook and yarn showed up with good detail and texture. I was testing to see if the iphone could do that. I was ready to pull out the big camera and macro lens if needed. May 21st
12 May 25 Reply I very carefully had included the word yarn so that people might realize the subject matter was about crocheting. That's why it's a vertical. I wasn't sure people would recognize a crochet hook. Wow, was I wrong! I love it that you all recognized my old fashioned hobby! And I really love that website you mentioned. Its actual URL is https://www.photocrowd.com/search/photos/crochet/

12 May 25 Reply I'm so surprised that everyone is saying not to include the skein of yarn! I included it because I thought no one would understand I was photographing a crochet project. How great that you all recognized a crochet hook and knew it went with yarn! That makes me happy! May 21st
12 May 25 Reply One of the benefits of belonging to an assigned subject group is finding out how we deal with subject matter that we normally would stay away from. It pushes us to draw on our photographic knowledge and techniques. Thanks to you all for being up to the challenge! Remember that this group isn't meant to be a showcase of our best work. It is meant as a place to study our techniques and learn more about photography in general. May 21st
12 May 25 Reply I forgot about the concept of totally even lighting not adding any drama or interest to an image. Good point! May 21st
12 May 25 Comment This is my first "delicious" still life! I, too, was attracted by the pretty colors. I agree that the fruit looks very inviting. Good camera viewpoint! I tried to think of a way to make the fruit stand out more. I noticed that the pineapple itself was in the "shade." When I brightened it, the entire drink looked more inviting. So, then I made the table top less distracting. Now I want one of these drinks! See my example photo. May 12th
12 May 25 Comment Welcome, Jarrod! We appreciate your creativity! I like your idea of using a book for a still life. How imaginative to photograph it in that horizontal position on a bookshelf. At first look, I was more distracted by the brightness of the extra bookshelf areas. Then, I realized the title was centered. I tried working with each situation. I decided that the Bible was emphasized the most when I cropped to an off-centered title, as shown in my sample photo below. I also added some contrast to it. We hope our ideas will be helpful for you, but remember that they are only opinions! I often get new ideas from other people's reactions! May 12th
12 May 25 Comment I love this idea of a window sill still life. Your class's assignment was much tougher than ours. I wouldn't know how to include a landscape in a still life. I, too, see the story of playing chess in your image. I also feel a mood. It is lonely and cold. Great image for the cover of a mystery novel or the story behind a movie! My only suggestion for improvement would be to remove the venetian blinds cord at the right side of the window. I don't think it adds anything. It might even distract from the graphic design of the the bare tree branches. May 12th
12 May 25 Comment I like that your subject matter for still life is unexpected. I never thought of using leaves like this. How clever that someone thought of a workshop featuring unique still life subject matter! I'm guessing you like to crop tightly. When I expanded the background a tiny bit, I felt that the group of leaves seemed to be sitting more naturally in the scene. While I liked the shape of the wood at the top, its bright areas pulled my eye away too long from the leaves. See my image for what it looks like with my suggestions. May 12th
12 May 25 Comment Cuteness is what I see! I've never seen such chickens! You reinforced the good tip that yard sales are great for finding little things to photograph. I like how the orange leaves coordinate with the tan coloring of the birdies. They are great supporting subjects. I have always had bad luck with black material as a backdrop, so I'd suggest, in hindsight, a middle shade of color for the background. I did notice the chicken's feet and liked the shapes, so I'd want to be able to see them. I found the out-of-focus tails to be distracting. I usually use at least f/16 for still life, because it is easy to blur something in post editing but not make it sharper. May 12th
12 May 25 Comment I immediately see a musical story with a ballet theme. I love how everything looks so sharp and crisp. Your added background seems to follow the curves of the still life objects. I like the uniqueness of your chosen items. I even see blue sheet music! My suggestion for improvement involves the lighting as done in post editing. I darkened the light areas near the violin and brightened the violin itself. I simply painted over the areas using a mask in Photoshop's filter called Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). May 12th
12 May 25 Comment Here's the final version of the doll purse I was crocheting. I added an AI background (garden pink flowers) using iphone Photoshop. The purse is 3 inches wide. May 9th
