I have recently purchased the book of the international 'Bird Photographer of the Year' Competition, and a a regular bird photographer I was very interested to see images that did not fit into the current international NH rules or to what club judges expect.
I would put this image into the animals in their environment category, but then all birds flying should be in that category, it however should also be in creative as the fog filler has been added. Having photographed flying terns on many occasions I have never made them as relatively small in the image, but it has worked very effectively and will have been easier to get a sharp bird than if it was much closer to the camera.
Well done I would class this as my favourite shot of the round. |

To me this is good action shot of the players in the basket ball match. As with many sport shots the background is a distraction because there is to much detail there. I would suggested experimenting with darkening down the white shirts and numbers in the background and then applying a reversed High-Pass filter to soften it further. White or light/ bright coloured items in the background are always a problem to eliminate. |

Though it is not my type of photography I like the effect that the Lensbaby has created in this image. There is an overall softness that to me is very acceptable and the lack of detail in the background and its hair concentrates my attention onto the face. |

To me this is great image utilising the colour contrast between the yellow of the interiors and the blu/green off the exterior, A blue /yellow contrast is always very effective.
Using multiple exposures/processing to create a set of images which enhance specific aspects of tone or detail and them combining and masking them in Photoshop is usually very effective. Often it is worth using HDR to enhance detail etc, but it often does not suit all areas of the image (often the sky), so combining and masking your HDR with one of the original images creates a better final effect. |

I really like the very soft feel to this image, and the way you have enhanced the colours in the flower. To me the out of focus background and vignetting are very appropriate. Looking at the image for ant length of time I find my eye is drawn away from the flower to the bright yellow out of focus area in the background. |

I like the way that you have concentrated more on the lighting on the canoes than on the sunset sky. Just wonder if it would be more powerful if it was flipped, as at present the stack of canoes acts like a block and if flipped your eye would be led along them to the sunset. |
