Thanks Stephen. I wasn't sure if there was some "rule of thumb". Will try multiple speeds as you suggest. |

Jean,
I love this image. I really love all the soft colors and the sky is beautiful. I was wondering what time of day it was when you took this. |

Stephen,
I had fun following all your calculations. I was wondering how to know what shutter speed to use to get just the right combination of sharpness and blur in a situation like this.
Thanks,

Hi Emily,
Pretty image, but makes me shiver thinking about it. You must have been freezing hiking around in January. I like Bev's edit removing the white sides, but I don't like the rocks in the edit as much as the original. They look a little "over sharpened" to me. Maybe somewhere between your original and the edited version would be good. |

Lloyd, it's a great shot! I love all the beautiful detail in the bird, which you have in nice sharp focus. Having tried to get good bird shots using a 200-500mm with a 1.4 teleconverter, I admire your ability. I found it really hard to get a sharp picture with the teleconverter. For me, birds in flight are difficult, especially smaller ones because they fly so fast. The colors are great and you managed to capture all the detail in the head and the eye. |

Jamie, I see why you said you were "into abstracts" this month. I love the effect you created. To me, it seems to make the vibrant colors stand out even more. I think it's a very fun idea. |

Margaret, I love the colors in the shot. I have been to the badlands. It's a really beautiful and interesting place. I love the textures and striations that you captured in the rock. The blue sky is wonderful, but I found the clouds on the right to be a little strange. I'm guessing that's due to the HDR. |

Bev, I love the blurring/softening of the background in your photo. I will check out the website because I have photos that could benefit from this idea. The only thing I don't like quite as much is the change in color of the flower itself. I like the original rose's delicate shading. To me, the change in the rose itself makes it look like it's a few days old and starting to wilt. |

Thanks Jamie. It looks interesting that way. It didn't occur to me to make it into an abstract. |
