Hi Jim. Something I find a bit interesting is comparing the image I have on my computer to the one on the website. It looks like the one I have is maybe +.15 up in exposure. I remember not exporting the file to PSA specs and having to resize the image. Mistake there. Compressing images is not the way to go. But, it does mean that I should take the time to revisit the image and see if everything is balanced the way I would like it to be. I am a fan of contrast, but what I see is not where I would like it to be. |

Stan, I wouldn't guess so for this photo. Dramatic sunsets are fairly standard in Tucson during monsoon season. In fact, it is pretty common year round to have sunsets that expose much of the visible light spectrum. The monsoon is quite dramatic because of the mixture of dust, pollen, pollution, oxygen levels, position of the sun and humidity. Of course, if there are any wildfires nearby, this would add particulate to the atmosphere and affect the sunsets, but at the time that was not a factor. |

Took it a step further and looked at the tail area. I don't use burn tools, so I went extreme in Lightroom. One issue I have with manipulating shadows is too much removal washes out the image. Tried to keep a balance is this edit. Not sure how well I did that. Contrast -55, highlights -44, shadow +24, black -8. I adjusted the tone curve as such; highlights -50, darks -18, shadows +72. I also increase yellow and green a bit to try to bring the image back to life. |

Took a day to get to but I got it done. I went -85 on blue vibrance and saturation. Takes out a lot of the shiny mirror effect. Removes the reflection off the gator's nose. Doesn't affect the overall image colors, but it does darken the image a touch. Stan had an interesting suggestion in burning the tail a bit to see if there is any detail hidden in there. For me, I like high contrast and sometimes that means having heavy blacks. |

I also looked up that info Stan. I was thinking along the same lines. Is this an alpha male challenge from a younger male? This photo was taken in August. Maybe a territory squabble? |

I have to say that I am also totally impressed that you were able to extract enough data from the original to produce your submission. I was thinking that maybe if I had cropped a bit tighter and then positioned the bee off-center, it might be a slightly more engaging image. Just an idea. |

Hi Sophia, what an amazing capture and what an amazing experience. The image you have chosen is spectacular. How long did it take you to sort through 1200 images hahahaha? That is dedication. Seeing the entirety of the tail means we can see what appears to be some scarring from previous fights. Also, we get to see great detail of the top and underside coloration of these alligators. The composition has great flow. Each subject is is communicating something different. The one on the right seems to be the non-aggressor in this situation, although that might have been very different in reality. I have this idea. I think that by taking some blue out of the image, it might remove or tone down the silvery-blue of the water and some areas on the gators. I'll give it a shot and post it. Might end up being a terrible idea :), we'll see |

Hi Stan, I downloaded your original to give it a go at editing, but sadly I think my LR 4 is on its final legs after the last series of Apple updates. I can't seem to import files as I used to be able to; something weird is going on. Anyways, my idea was to see what it would look like if the blue part across the top 1/4 was cropped out as well as a bit from the left and right (or maybe leave the left and right alone to create a pano). The bee really sticks out green the greens, so maybe keeping it is bit minimalist would be a nice image. The focal fade of the grass and grass flowers is exceptionally nice with this lone bee showing the lengths it needs to go in order to provide pollen. So, that was my idea. I'll mess around with LR4 to see if I can get it done. If not, it might finally be time to upgrade hahhaa |
