24 Aug 21 Reply I like how you used the word "soft" to describe the 4 inch long needles hahaha but that was part of my intention. Of the various f-stops I used to take this photograph, I picked this one because of two main qualities; the lightness and delicacy of the petals and just the right amount of gradual blur to maintain the cactus part of the photograph. 24 Aug 21 Reply Hi Laura. I wouldn't disagree with where you went with the image. I would say it is a bit overdone. This flower is subtle and delicate unlike some of the other cactus flowers from the Sonoran Desert that are incredibly vibrant. Maybe that is why I liked this one, because it is different. Aug 26th
24 Aug 21 Reply Hi Gaetan, I can see what you are trying to do, but in all honesty, if it so far away from the authenticity of the moment and hardly resembles a cactus flower anymore. For me, I can't stray too far away from what it is that I am trying to capture. The image that I submitted for this month is an example of the limit I will go. Aug 26th
24 Aug 21 Reply I took Jim's edit and did some color manipulation. This is just a personal preference edit, but I would like to see the white lotus as being white or as close as possible, much like your original pre-processed image. By adjusting saturation and luminance, it is possible to render the flower towards the original capture. Aug 20th
24 Aug 21 Comment Hi Albert. I think there are a few ways to go with this image. I wouldn't disagree with what the others have said so far. I did a quick little edit to see if picking two of the egrets might work as subjects. Dealing with wet mud is not easy. As I see it, your original has hints of magenta, violet and red caused by the refraction of light. I individually reduced the saturation of these colors plus blue in an attempt to mute those colors. Other than that I tried to straighten the horizon and reduced shadows a touch. Aug 20th
24 Aug 21 Comment Hi Laura. Great capture. Her focus is intense yet she seems rather controlled with all the chaos around her. I would agree with Jim. There seems to be a few colors that have popped up during post-processing which I'm guessing are related to a touch too much saturation. Aug 5th
24 Aug 21 Comment Hi Sam. I don't think there is anything else to add to what Laura and Jim have said. I find your composition to be a great example of memento mori. Aug 5th
24 Aug 21 Comment Hi Gaetan. Beautiful capture and well presented. My question for is about the colors of your final image. Looking at the original, there are shades of yellow and green on the underside of the flower (lotus?) and I'm guessing that is due to reflection. The top part of the flower is mostly white with hints of cream and butter. The final image has a lot of yellow and green. Were these color changes intentional? Aug 5th
24 Aug 21 Comment Hi Jim, I have no experience with portrait photography so unfortunately I can not be of much help here. As for what you have presented, I don't think to add. There is one consideration that you might think about and that is removing the lamp above her head and then maybe darkening that area a bit. My thinking behind it is this could help keep the viewers attention in the foreground. Aug 5th
24 Aug 21 Reply Hi Jim. Thanks for your input. I took a series of images using different f-stops. I found that having the cactus needles in focus took away from the flower being the subject as well as being bit chaotic. But, as you said, there are a few different ways to present an image like this depending on where the photographer wants to lead the narrative. The needles on this cactus are a few inches long so it is quite the intimidating plant. By blurring them out, I was hoping to remove that aspect while trying to focus on the fragility of the flower. Not sure if I fully accomplished that. Aug 5th

97 Aug 21 Comment Hi Matthias, although I agree with the rule of thirds sometimes, sometimes I don't. For this image, I like the duality that a center horizon line creates. I would agree with Regine about reducing the highlights on the white burnt areas, if nothing else but to keep the eyes from wanting to always focus on that part of the image.

97 Aug 21 Comment Hi Jeffery, great capture of this family. As you mentioned, it is a beautiful thing to see how evolution mimics environment. Aug 20th
97 Aug 21 Comment Hi Stanley, that Herring Gull has great camouflage. Not sure if that crab stood a chance. I also like contrasting tones between the subjects. Aug 15th
97 Aug 21 Comment Hi Sophia. Another great shot. Did you do anything to the background to get that brush stroke quality to it? It looks great. Aug 15th
97 Aug 21 Reply Hi Stanley. Everyone is in agreement. I should have included the tail. Not sure why I didn't, but it is definitely good feedback and something I need to remember in the future. Aug 15th
97 Aug 21 Reply Hi Jeffery. Good point. I cropped it to where the colors end, and in doing so failed to see the bigger picture. Aug 15th
97 Aug 21 Reply Hi Sophia. Thanks for your feedback. I hadn't noticed that bright spot, thanks for pointing it out. Good point about cropping out the tail. I guess I was focused on the colors and since the tail are the same greys as the head, I didn't really think it necessary to include. Also, I would have to admit that I wasn't thinking about my audience when I made the crop. Aug 15th
